Exit Opps From Federal Transaction Services
Hey everyone, got a quick question. I have a job offer from a well known consulting firm for a position that has a fancy name (Transaction Services/Corporate Development Analyst) but is essentially a pricing role that helps structure and shape deals/bids for projects using internal cost models. It's in their federal contracting division, and it'd be a big upgrade over my current position. But, it's in my hometown and I'd like to move elsewhere, so I've got a tough decision.
My question is, do you think there would be solid exit opportunities from this role in 1-3 years? I'm a 2015 grad of a top 50 school with a finance degree and an internship at a top bank in their wealth management division. I'm really interested in getting into some sort of private equity/venture capital role, but obviously those are hard to come by, so I'm trying to be careful about where I land.
Let me know what you think! Will this job be a good stop in the journey to getting into PE or VC? Would you expect there to be other good exit opportunities? Think I should just try to get into a solid MBA program and transition into the field I want from there? Will I get trapped in the federal consulting death spiral? Thanks in advance!
This would not be good for PE or VC. Just not relevant. This role seems to be very specialized and may pigeonhole you. If you want PE, you need M&A transaction experience. Plain and simple. Go for roles that will allow for that.
Gotcha, thanks for the reply. I don't know anyone in the M&A/IB/PE/VC fields, and I don't think my current experience as an auditor/cost analyst is going to help me move in that direction. Any advice? Suck it up and pay for one of those 'WallStreetPrep' type programs?
I think I know what firm you're speaking of - I had an interview and ultimately ended up not taking it because as you noted above - the title and responsibilities are EXTREMELY different. However, I believe that firm has a pretty good Finance rotational program that lasts about 3 years and is a good springboard for a solid MBA program - if you can get into the program that is. I feel your pain, because I was an auditor too and want to land in PE/VC eventually. What other roles are you looking at? And what location are you in/want to be in? If this is too much detail, feel free to PM me.
