Experienced Finance Professional, Non-Target - How Can I Break Out?
Hello all,
I've been following the site since finishing grad school last year, and couldn't think of anywhere else I can get some no-BS real commentary and input. I've been working for a major defense contractor for the last 5 years after graduating with my undergrad and recently finished my MSF, non-target. I also want to mention that my company is in the southwestern US.
For some time I've really been wanting a change of pace, and have been feeling like I've been stuck. Growth in this company is hard to come by unless you're one of those chosen LDPs, and I know that my real calling is elsewhere. I work my ass off and put my nose to the grind stone to get things done, and I will move mountains if I have to in order to make things happen. I like real action and results and don't like waiting around for someone to do their job before I can finish mine. Problem is, my work environment isn't very receptive to this kind of mind set and seems like no one has a burning fire under their ass to work with a sense of urgency like I do.
To cut to the chase, I've been wanting to get into advisory, of course with any of the big 4 firms but would also want to get in with a smaller firm if I can. Lately I've been reading more and more about IB and PE folks and the day to day grind and I feel like my personality and work ethic will thrive in these arenas. My issue is that I don't have much exposure to firms like these, don't hold any licenses, and don't live near a thriving financial district. I wanted to know if any of you have been in this situation, if so, what did you do to get yourself out there and how did it work out for you. I'm considering moving to a more thriving market, as I think it'd be difficult to get selected living here when large markets like NY, Boston, or SF have a saturated market of talent and qualified candidates that they can choose from. This is of course risky without landing the job first, but I'm willing to do whatever it takes to get myself out there and show the right person that I mean business and want to work for them. Any input or advice would be great, thanks in advance everyone.
