Experiences with BNY Mellon - Alcentra
Did you intern at BNY Mellon - Alcentra or do you know somebody who did and could you please share your experience?
How prestigious would you rate the firm and what do you think about it? Is it somewhere you would intern?
Thanks for letting me know, would help me out a lot.

Hey everyone,
I'm just curious as to whether or not anybody's heard of these guys? Not sure whether or not they fall into Wellington/Third Ave type of AM umbrella or if they are considered more of a hedge fund (line seems to blur for guys that do investment mgmt in disstressed/hy). Decent AUM at ~$13bn, but that's all I really know.
Anyways, love to hear any feedback about this shop; culture, comp, background, similar shops (sans the two I mentioned above) etc.
Thanks!
Not a true HF - more a BDC/mezz lender. Def no distressed stuff. Pay is more comparable to banking than it is to other buyside shops.
Their website claims to do distressed. Also, they have funds on Bloomberg that are listed as closed ended and hedge funds. I know that they do mezz lending and some BDC stuff, but it also seems that some of the funds are most fixed income investment mgmt.
Not saying that you are wrong valueisoverrated, just trying to clarify a few things.

They're also featured on some HF websites for awards. Hedge Week best Distressed securities manager is one of them. And I think I misstated AUM.
Anyone have an opinion on Alcentra (or the people there), or have insight not available searching the Web? (Originally Posted: 05/14/2014)

Applying for the analyst gig huh...
They are affiliated with BNY Mellon. Mostly do middle market mezz lending and some minority equity investments. Have a focus on healthcare, but not sure what other industries they are active in. Have spoken with a few people there, but didn't end up moving forward on the deal so can't provide a ton of color. They seem to be active, have a stable capital base and the team seems pretty solid - if mezz is your thing I think it could be a good opportunity.
Focused on the non-mezz side - or loans and bonds
