Fake ID in College

I attend a target university and so many people on campus have fakes. Every week underage freshmen and sophomores go out to the bars and clubs, as if it is completely normal to have a fake ID and frequent these establishments. I am all for having some fun and drinking at parties, but it just seems so silly jeopardizing your future like this, especially when attending an elite top 15 institution.

I would be interested in hearing your thoughts on this as most people on this forum are type A and extremely career oriented. Do you or did you have a fake? Is it a stupid decision to get one?

I have a fake. I don't think it was a stupid decision because I put the time into finding one that's legitimate and scans, holographs, blacklight, etc. I've never been denied using it but I think that's because usually I have a beard, and I easily look over 21, plus I'm pretty good about not acting like a jackass when drinking. The only people (that I've noticed) get caught using a fake were people who spent like $50 on a cheap one, or they obviously act as if they're under 21 and draw attention to themselves.

How is having a fake ID jeopardizing your career? If you get caught by the bar they just tell you to leave. If it gets denied at a store you just leave without your alcohol. If a cop asks to see your ID at a bar you OBVIOUSLY give him your real one and just take the MIP hit. Why would you ever give a cop a fake ID?

I don't really understand your question though. Do you really stop and think about your future career every time you're about to do something that people expect you to do in college? Some people on this board need to get out more.

if you get caught with a fake you get more than a MIP... but honestly sack up, if you're in a college town the chance of getting caught are slim to none.

Makes sense...just trying to be careful. I mean I think you are right about chances of getting caught are pretty slim. In terms of ordering a fake online though...not so sure about that, since authorities have cracked down and shut down many of the "companies" making fakes.

You said everyone on your campus has one (of course, its college) ask someone where they got it. Never give a cop a fake and don't have any of your real info on it. You will be fine

The systematic risk of having a Fake ID given the current market conditions (i.e. mass amount of people who get caught/have one in general) is theoretically 0. Dude, nobody goes to jail for a Fake ID. You get caught with one at a bar or a store, most likely they tell you to leave and worst case scenario they will take your ID from you and then tell you to leave. On rare occasions, people get a "fake ID ticket", but that is because they were already committing a crime such as: urinating in public, stumbling in public, disorderly conduct, fights etc. And then the cop will search your wallet, looking for one, and gives you a ticket....

If you're not a complete dumbass and use your head (which I know you do since you go to a good school) than you have nothing to worry about at all. Just a little side note: I got my first fake ID when I was 15 years old in the East village in NYC.. That's a sophomore in HS.. Needless to say, never been caught. And god damnit, those were some good days..

You're forgetting that academic intelligence doesn't equal street smarts.

Well if the details on your fake ID match any person including yourself, it is a felony.

However, most bars either just say its fake and hand it back and you leave. Other places take it and chop it up.

But if you are caught elsewhere with it, you could end up being in much more trouble. Example, friend had it in his backpack going through airport security back to school. Got selected for random search, they found it and arrested him. He had to go to court to get it down to a misdeanor instead of a felony.

Stick to dive bars with it and you will be fine.

I planned on getting a fake up until I turned 21. Never really got to it. I was more into house parties and such throughout college. And when I went out, it was often with my older siblings' friends and I never got carded.

Getting an MIP isn't going to break your precious BB chances...

My buddy a few doors down in my college dorm made them. He only made one state and they were perfect. Not only did they scan, barcodes, holograms, etc..., but the texture, weight, feel, bend, opacity, etc.. were spot on as well. He was a smart kid and never got caught. Other than the few he made for his closest friends, he only sold to kids at other schools through friends of friends. He ran a first class operation and made a decent amount of money from it. You'd be amazed how easily you can have 10,000 holograms made in China and shipped directly to you for a few thousand dollars...

If you have a fake, pull it out of your wallet and take a look at it:

To check IDs bouncers/security will do a few other things, if they're knowledgable and the bar cares enough, to check the ID's authenticity. Does the ID crease if you bend it? Fake if it does. Shine a light through the ID. If there are any bubbles, taping, laminate, or other imperfections it's fake. Is the finish glossy? Likely a fake as a result of crappy laminate. Most fakes are way to thick as most people just laminate paper or print on PVC. Does the signature look appear to be digital font?

The hardest thing to mimick is the 3d embossing some states are putting on their IDs, but legal consumer technology is right behind them with the evolution of the 3d printer.

Not having a fake. NF.

But really, its not a big deal. I've had one for 4 years and nothing bad has happened. Even accidentally handed it to a cop out of habit when pulled over for rolling a stop sign. He just laughed and gave it back to me, didn't bother him in the slightest.

Wisconsin just passed a law that allows bars to sue people caught underage drinking, for up to like $1,000. Just check the local laws and see what its like. University police are perhaps tougher on underage drinking - don't get caught blatantly drunk in the dorms etc.

At any rate, just hit up house parties and frat parties. You get hammered for $5 and can probably pick up a girl or 2 most nights.

to the people saying what's the big deal...

I knew this girl who tried to use one at the liquor store, the clerk who inspected it saw that it was fake, called the cops and then she got sued by the DMV for fraud or impersonation or something of the like. With that said, I'm sure if you take the time to, like other people have said, search around and be willing to put some money into a quality one then you should be good.

Not too sure why people get one though because because there are probably a lot of places one could party at other than the bar, and for a lot cheaper than buying overpriced drinks..unless you go to UGA but that wouldn't be a top 15 school...

Friend of mine in school got caught with a fake trying to buy beer. Cashier said he was calling cops, friend just ran out and didn't return to that store. No real information on the card and nothing ever happened

Literarily the SOFTEST post i've ever read on WSO.

This.

Be smart with it (i.e. use it where you know people always get in and avoid any notoriously tough spots) but use it and have fun - you are in college. I'm sure it depends on the state but getting caught with one and even receiving a fictitious license possession charge is not the end of the world. You will still get a job.
