So under the "interests"section of my resume I want to put down the name of an English Premier League soccer team I follow. I am not some passive fan but I really do follow everything about the team. My only concern is what if I put down the name of the team and the person reviewing my resume is a fan of a rival team? I know it sounds like a ridiculous concern but it seems people will ding you for anything. Is it dangerous to put your favorite team on a resume?

Not sure this is something I'd personally do, but I wouldn't worry about getting dinged because the interviewer is a fan of a rival team. In fact, as an avid (as far as American fans go) Chelsea supporter, I prefer striking up conversation with people wearing a Man U jersey more than a CFC one -- the opportunity for discourse is always more exciting when there is friendly contention.
What about an NBA team? The way I see it, it will either initiate a conversation or nothing will happen. Agree / disagree anybody?

I'd rather talk with someone who is a fan of a rival fan than a fan of my team, as they are going to have a more interesting back and forth, and I'd rather talk with someone who is a fan of any team than no team at all.
Thanks for the replies. I will probably include it. If it initiates conversation then all the better. I pretty much have a good knowledge of all teams in Europe so if someone likes another team I think I could hold an interesting discussion with them as well.
OP, I also follow a soccer team very passionately so I understand how you feel. Personally, I leave out the name of the team partly because of what another poster said - being a "soccer fan" in the US always seems to be laughed at by most Americans (said but true). Personally, I put something like "European and International Soccer" (though some argue I shouldn't). I think this is more likely to strike up a conversation regardless of the interviewer's favorite team; I've had countless of laughs and discussions with interviewers about specific teams in EPL, Serie A, La Liga and, more so, about the World Cup and the Champions League.
Soccer is a great thing to talk about, especially if the interviewer is a fan as well. The amount of money that flows around in Europe is getting insane. There is a lot to talk about in regards to the finances and how money (truly) affects the game. My dream job would be being a football manager. Transfer season is so exciting!
I wouldn't put the actual team. I put Rugby under interests and it just so happened one of the guys interviewing me was a big follower and we had a good convo about the sport and our teams.
