Federal Reserve (Financial Institution Supervision Group) Vs MS Private Wealth Management

I just recently got very serious about trying to have a career in ER or S&T and would like to know what should I do to better my chances. I feel that it is a bit late in the game for me compared to my peers (In terms of getting those positions straight out of undergrad).

Here is the situation that I'm in.

Next academic year, I plan to intern during the school year and this is where I am in need of some advice. I can work part time at the Fed NY in their Financial Institution Supervision Group or at MS as a Private Wealth Management intern.

1) Which of these two would help me land a summer internship in ER or S&T next summer.
2) Do you guys think I should split it in the sense of working for the Fed for one semester and at MS for the next?
3) Will either even be worth it or should I be looking for something else?

(3) Doing at least one is definitely worth it. Working during the semester demonstrates great time management skills and helps you stand out. (2) If you have the longevity to do both, then by all means do both. However, I would say that it'll be difficult to work, go to school, and go through recruiting all at once. (1) I would say go with FISG at the Fed, because it is much more unique. Also, having done a PWM internship myself, IMO I don't think there is much to learn.

Are you currently a sophomore?

Google some non-profit organizations in your area that can help you develop professionally. Attend their monthly meetings religiously and build rapport with the community. Make it a goal to shake hands with one, three, or five new professional every meeting. In time, if you network correctly, you'll have a snowball effect for people wanting to meet you.

I'm currently a junior, but I'm graduating in Dec 2016.

I accepted a product control position for a BB (GS/MS/JP) this summer, but after reading about product control, I'm not sure how useful it will be, which is why I plan to intern during the school year. From your experience in PWM, can you at least leverage it to a ER or S&T position?

I think it will be tough to leverage just a PWM internship for ER or S&T at a BB. I'm unfamiliar with product control, but the closer you can get to doing something that is directly related to ER or S&T the better your chances will be when you go through recruiting. I used PWM to get a BB Middle office internship to get a BB IBD gig. But, as always, anything is possible. Keep grinding, it sounds like you are doing the right things.
