Finding Investment Opportunities
So my boss wants me to find investment opportunities, not given any cap specification, just that it's domestic equities. I'm assuming there are plenty of PMs and investment analysts on WSO, and was just curious how you went about it. Is it just running different filters like P/ Book, stocks at 52 week low?
Screening is one way; it can be especially good if you have an industry focus (ie if a certain E&P company trades at a very different multiple than its peers, why is that? Is a correction likely?)
Top-down is another (ie come up with an idea like: gold prices are going up>buy mining companies and investigate different options from there)
Medical insurance & drug companies are usually a good bet since they are going to be hot due to the aging generation's need of more medical help worldwide.
Small cap pharma with drugs in the pipeline - big risk, big return, probably stay away from this. Potential acquisition targets - pharma has been buying up a bunch, MSFT, GOOG, AAPL, etc have a lot of cash on hand to swipe up smaller companies.
If you have been paying attention recently, something has been flash-crashing just about every day. Sometimes it's after hours or an instrument that falls outside the parameters your boss gave you, but if you are willing to stare at a screen for 6 and a half hours and pee into a gatorade bottle (in the time it takes to go use the pisser, you could miss it), you should be able to catch the move, right?
Oh, you said "investment." I dunno.
