Finland
Hi!
I´m from Finland and I was wondering what do people in USA know/ think about Finland in general (the first thing that comes to your mind for example). Since there are only 5 million of us, I won´t be surprised if you can't tell me anything.. But thanks anyway!
Well you said first thing that comes to mind, so...
Great F1 drivers, Hakkinen, Rosberg, Bottas, and most importantly my all-time fav, Kimi Raikkonen.
Rosberg is not Finnish. If he was, Raikkonen would have less respect for him for the ending excuse train that as been the last two seasons from his end of the garage.
Keke my man. I am a throwback F1 fan
The average man-on-the-street American will literally know nothing about Finland. I don't mean that they will know very little--I mean they will literally know nothing. Zero. The people on this forum, however, tend to be more worldly/cosmopolitan/educated, so will have an opinion that will probably give you a false sense of how much Americans actually know about Finland.
For me, the words "cold", "socialist", "close to Russia" come to mind.
This is sadly true, most probably don't know where it is. I always think of Hockey, skiing, and Nokia.
Viking booze cruises originate from Finland, right? I took one from Helsinki to Stockholm back in 2010..that was a great time. Finlandia is one of my favorite vodkas. I've had Karhu beer.
I know a few phrases in Finnish...kippis, mina raakastan sinua, kiitos, mita kuulu (spelling errors will be had!).
The northern lights...light summer, dark winter... I've been to Helsinki and Lahti.
Ehm, you guys like hockey and are decent at it ;)
Lots of heavy metal-type people, at least from what I've seen.
Good looking girls with high cheek bones.
That's about what I know. Oh yeah, you kicked Russia's ass (on a per solder basis) in WW2.
The Winter War, and for some reason Finland in Finnish is Suomi.
Don't you have more guns per capita than the US?
Also, you invented the verb "Finlandize" ie become Russia's bitch for fear of Russia invading.
Also, I'm not sure your language is from the Indo-European language group. Sounds more steppe-ish and Uralic. Whenever I see someone northern European looking, but they are speaking something utterly unintelligible and unrecognisable, I guess "Finnish" and I'm inevitably right.
I should say suomettuminen.

Nokia
Teemu Selanne from NHL94
I was in Helsinki for a day last July. Cold as hell (low 40's with strong winds), and didn't seem like there was much to do even though the city was clean. Other than that, my favorite hockey player (Teemu Selanne) is from there and they have a good music scene.
