"First Generation" On Resume

Also, what do you all think about putting "first generation college student" under the education portion on my resume? Personally, I think it is impressive that I am a first generation looking to break into banking and that I've already achieved a lot of success relative to my peers, a lot of whom have parents that went to ivy-leagues and are now doctors, and in banking. I don't want to look like I am using it as a crutch or anything or that they think I have low self-esteem.

I wouldn't include it. It may rub people the wrong way, and while you may be proud of it, those who are the sons of doctors and lawyers and Ivy Leaguers (many who will be reading your resume) won't see it from the same angle as you.

Too risky.

Dude, just write a normal fucking resume. No more stupid questions about putting random shit on your resume. If you absolutely think it will get you the job (which it won't), bring it up on your "tell me about yourself" or something.

but some people put stuff on their resume in education like "deans list" "Sat math score" etc.

Those are COMPLETELY different than being a first-generation college student. If you made the Dean's List, put it on there. If you have a good SAT score, put it on there. That doesn't mean you should put first-generation on there.

being a first generation myself I would not for a second put that on my resume. It may be detrimental to your candidacy especially since high finance is sometimes a world of prestige and you dont want to look like a pauper trying to break into the company with all the guys who have multiple generations of family who are lawyers doctors and other professionals.

Save that talk for interviews about achievements or whatever, and perhaps even mba admissions essays.

Btw I went to Baruch and id estimate that 80% of the students there were the first in their family to go to college, imagine how much the guy at JP morgan would want to shoot himself if he has to read that line on every baruch applicants resume.

Again, just say no. This is something that could work for B school (if it comes with a great background story), but not for IB resumes. Bankers don't care if you are the 1st or 72nd generation - they just want to know what you've done - grades, school, etc and who you know. If anything, you might risk coming off as deserving since you've had to work so hard already, you deserve this shot more than those connected H/Y/P snobs or something like that. Either way, feel free to bring it up during an interview (in a tactful way of course), but don't drop it on the resume - it'll either be seen as fluff or worse.

No........it smacks of culture war. If you want to bring it up during interviews, be tactful about it. As a non-first generation college kid whose parents are one of those that you mentioned, it makes me feel uncomfortable if someone overly stresses his challenging family circumstances. I mean, I can empathize with what you have gone through but I've also worked very hard to get to where I am now.

From the way you put it "I think it is impressive that I am a first generation .... and that I've already achieved a lot of success relative to my peers, " - it will put interviewers off and make you look like an unadjusted tool when you tell that part of your story.

Horrible idea, you will get dinged automatically. Who gives a shit if you're a first generation student. If anything it will hurt you because they will know why you got into whatever college you go to. And it wasn't because of your smizzzarrrtsss.

stuy if you got an interview at MS putting first gen on your resume, then obviously it worked. why the hell are you on here asking it? now, I don't believe you got an interview at MS based on the level of the crap you've been posting...I doubt you even go to an Ivy. I think the reason you keep posting these things is because you're desperate to have something comparable to the people who come from Ivies and have "Deans List" or "Presidential Honors" under their education section.

Also, nobody cares you went to Stuy dude.
