Follow up after phone interview - Thank you note
Do you guys normally send a thank you after a phone interview, or just in person interviews? Also my interview seemed to be all fit questions. How do they judge you if all Q's are fit? Thanks in advance.
MandA, there are PLENTY of ways to judge someone based solely on fit questions or simply just talking to someone. You don't get a feel for their technical capabilities, but you can certainly understand their ambition, drive, general intellectual horsepower, and other characteristics one might use to weed people out.
As far as thank you letters go -- I receive them after pretty much every phone interview. I don't pay them much mind, though I do get annoyed at the ones that reiterates the candidate's strengths or interest in the position. 99/100 times I've already made my decision prior to hanging up the phone, so they don't have an impact. One word of advice: A thank you letter is to say "thank you", not "thank you, here is why I'm awesome for the position!"
CompBanker, I understand that letters can get annoying when they become a little overbearing, but I've always heard that it's better to reiterate your selling points in the thank you letter.
Maybe it is a personal thing, but I prefer a thank you letter that is actually thanking me to one that is selling yourself. Bankers in general are very good at remembering details (it is scary at times actually) and if you were a candidate worth passing on, odds are they remember you. HR may need the reminder due to the sheer number of resumes they sort through, but the actual bankers don't conduct enough interviews to necessitate a reminder. In the end, do whichever you prefer. I don't believe that thank you letters can hurt or help you in this industry.
