Following up - Junior at target
I'm a junior at a target, looking for SA in IBD. I've made a few contacts at info sessions this semester, and then I followed up right away with a thank you email and a question. I got responses from most of the contacts, and now I feel it's the time to follow up with them again. I already got answers from my contacts to questions about their background and preparation for the interviews. However, I have no idea what are some good questions to ask at this point. I have the WSO networking guide, but the questions listed there seem more appropriate for the first meeting. Or should a short "happy new year, thanks for your help" email suffice? thanks.
Depending on where you are with them (did you ever send out a resume?), I would consider something along the lines of "Just reaching out to wish you a happy holidays, blah blah blah. I wanted to take this opportunity to send along an updated resume. I would appreciate any information regarding the interview process and timeline at [xyz bank]."
It's a bit forward, but again, depending on how your initial email exchange went, I think this is OK. Not to mention, these contacts aren't necessarily alum connections (they may be, but you didn't cold email them — you met them at information sessions, and those sessions are for precisely this — recruiting). It depends on how aggressive you want to be. I don't think it hurts to attach your resume and ask for information about when interviews begin and what the recruiting process is like — you're not asking them to forward your resume on or anything like that.
Alright I'd like to throw out a question here: Subject Lines
I hate them and I am horrible at what to put there
help??
No one cares, just make sure it's specific enough to gain the attention of the recipient. For example, any alum I ever contacted, I made sure I included my school's name in the subject line. These guys get tons of emails, but rarely do they ever have to do with their alma mater — tossing in the school name will catch their attention. I'd do, "COLLEGE NAME Connection," or follow-up, or something like that.
thanks for your advice. I haven't sent out my resume to them before. I thought it was too direct without them asking for it first, but the way you put it makes it seem fine. most of my contacts are analysts/associates - not sure if this makes a difference.
As an analyst, I know what you're looking for — just send the resume. I can assure you that by attaching it, you will not offend anyone. Just word it as I suggested — attaching an updated resume and kindly ask that they provide you with information on the process and when interviews are expected to begin.
Wondering the same as well. Asking for the timeline seems a little weird as our OCR lists all the important dates. I think the analysts/associates are currently in the process of picking out resumes from our resume book. Should I just send them a "just wanted to follow up" email?
You're going to say, "Just wanted to follow up"? That's stupid. It doesn't hurt to ask about the interview process (i.e. one or two phone screens? how many office visits? etc.) and recruiting timeline. If you can think of other questions to ask, then by all means do so, but sending a plain email saying, "I'm just following up" is going to look a bit weird.
If you are applying to any of these firms as a junior, ask them for "advice" on how to best position yourself to get a summer analyst position at the firm.
