I would appreciate this as well.
I'm pretty sure CIQ has a manual (might be a little outdated now) for this sort of thing. You should call or chat someone in client support.
Also, there's a formula builder with a search function.
2nd the formula builder w/ search function
Seconded on the formula builder. I have a few lovely CapIQ templates for TEV and multiple calcs. Though if you shoot an email to your rep you should get a response in about an hour with the manual but you are better off learning for yourself
Client support... they'll walk you through it
Yeah...client support and also if CapIQ is being used you should be able to search the excel functions within excel? not sure if this was for older versions.
Capital IQ Help (Originally Posted: 02/23/2007)
Hey guys--having a little trouble running a screen in capital iq. I want to find all public companies that have been taken private by private equity firms in the last 20 years. I also need some key financial data for the year in which the company was taken private (i.e. cash flow, sales, inventory turns, etc.). Is there any way I can get this data in CapIq. All I have gotten so far are going private transactions...but not all of them are from private equity firms and not all of them are pure plays (public to private). Thanks for your help.
if you call their help desk they are usually VERY helpful. will practically walk you through it.

Capital IQ Question (Originally Posted: 06/12/2007)
Question for everyone:
When screening companies in Excel it is easy to get officers of the companies\firms you are looking for. It is also easy to get people's email addresses when searching for people. However, when screening for companies\firms, is it possible to get Capital IQ to give their email addresses as part of the search results?
correction.....when screening companies in CAPITAL IQ to be loaded into Excel
Don't beleive so.
Thanks no tears-
If there is a way to do it, I haven't found it. So, if I'm looking for financial buyers - how do you guys usually go about contacting them?
Call them for help, they are usually very helpful I have found.
You can send the template back to CapIQ. Have all the fields filled in except for a row or column marked with "e-mail". Their tech center will take one day to send it back with everything filled in.
Call Tech Support, they do an outstanding job. Tell them what you want to do and they'll walk you through the steps necissary to get it done.
Capital IQ shortcuts and tips for people/shops (Originally Posted: 09/13/2011)
I'm getting access to Capital IQ tomorrow for a few hours and was hoping someone could tell me the best ways to make sense of all the searching criteria.
I'd like to isolate HFs in NYC, London, Singapore, SF and Philly with $400M AUM or greater... And then find the people associated with the firms.
Any tips or advice. Wouldn't mind sharing the info here once I'm done either... so this could be beneficial for all.

My school, despite being a crappy non target, has a crazy collection of licenses (Capital IQ being one of them) but I haven't really had a chance to play around with it (getting my login info tomorrow) what is it typically used for? is it just a reference database of banks and funds since that is all I've really seen it used for on here.
First of all, Screening -> Companies
It's very possible that I'm just dumb, but I'm only returning 10 results.
Geographic Locations: Singapore or Greater London or San Francisco Area or New York City Area or Philadelphia Area
Investment Type: Hedge Funds or Principal Investing or Principal Investing Fund of Funds or Investor in Funds
Industry Specific Financials: Assets Under Management : Greater than $400MM USD
for those who have used Capital IQ-searching for transactions (Originally Posted: 12/27/2011)
Hi friends,
While searching for transactions in Capital IQ, when I select TEV / LTM EBITDA as a criteria, it gives the results for the latest multiples. Is there not a way by which I can get the results for the multiples paid at the time of transaction, and not the latest multiples?
Thanks
It does give the option to select the time frame for the multiple but how do I select the date when I do not know the date of transaction?
figured it out. It does have an option for search for transaction multiples.
How to use Capital IQ to search for firms (Originally Posted: 09/13/2012)
Hi,
I'm completely new to Capital IQ, and was wondering how I can use it to search for boutique investment firms, or other jobs related to finance in my target areas.
I've tried to figure it out myself, but am unsure if I'm doing it right. So far, I've been on the "Screening" tab, using key words that sound right. I am getting some results, but I'm not sure if I'm making the right searches to get the optimal results. Each keyword I input brings multiple screening choices, and even those I'm not sure if I am choosing correctly. I don't even know if "Screening" is the right place to be.
If anyone can offer help as to how I should go about the searches, it would help very much! I'm late in the game, trying to find an internship that can start now or within a few months. This whole networking thing is a large obstacle, but if I can just find the firms, I know I can do what needs to be done next.
Thanks for your help!
...... Screens -> build up multiple screening criteria...
Great, looks like I'm on the right track then. Thanks!
Do you have any recommended screening criteria? I'm a third year student studying Finance, and would like to find relevant work experience in the field.
use the business description screener (shortcut is "bd") and search for key words. you can filter by number of employees as well. if you can give me a more specific description of what you are looking for i might be able to help you put a screen together.
Cap IQ: How to search for league tables and past transactions (Originally Posted: 12/20/2012)
Monkeys, I am new to S&P CapIQ and am looking for some advice. Like the thread title reads, I am trying to find past transactions of industry groups at particular banks (ex: Energy, BNP Paribas). Also, trying to find league tables in industries (ex: Energy M&A League Table). How do I process these searches in CapIQ (am having a surprisingly difficult time figuring out how to do this)?
I am not sure if either of these can be run out of CapIQ. Would be much better off with Thomson or MergerMarket. You can click the screening tab at the top and screen for all transactions using the criteria builder (ie data, industry, public/private). Then when you get your output you can add an output column and search for advisor and add that which should give you what you want. I would honestly just call CIQ or use the IM in the upper right of CapIQ and just ask...that's what they are there for. Going forward anytime it takes you more than a minute or two to find what you are looking for in any of the financial providers I would call and ask. The bank pays alot of money for them.
IM CapIQ client support..they'll sort you out. Then report back for the benefit of the group.
danielle Hi, my name is Danielle. How can I help you? danielle To screen for a league table on S&P Capital IQ:
Note: The above screen can be narrowed to include specific types of transactions such as M&A's or IPO's. It can also be narrowed by geography. Note: To expand results, omit steps 4 and 5.

It's like learning excel, just play around with it. Practice screening for comps, M&A transactions, etc. Familiarize yourself with the layout and the different stuff you can do.
Decide to invest $100 in a stock and use Cap IQ to help you do research. You can play with the screening, financials, estimates, comps, research, and other features.

Hi fellow monkeys,
Can anyone point me to some resources for learning how to use Cap IQ? I have some of the basics down, however I still do no know how to fully utilize the program. Any help would be appreciated and thank you in advance!
Are you talking about the Excel Plugin or the Website?
I would check out the templates in excel format for a start, this will just give you a general idea of how things are structured/how formulas work.
Assume he means the desktop program. The only way you learn these things is by messing around. Click on stuff and see what happens. Learn the codes for the excel plugin. They will be your best friend.
