Anyone know what's the typical background of a freight trader/charterer at major commodity traders? Shipbroking?

Thx.
Would something like the Institute of Chartered Shipbrokers help break in?
I'm sure it can't hurt but I'm no expert on what the freight trading desks would look for. I'm sure there are specific backgrounds that are beneficial but more than anything, it will be based on the specific needs of the desk/company. It also depends on what level you're coming in as. With no experience, you're obviously not coming in trading LRs and VLCCs on day 1 but at least most physical companies will take a junior person and groom them.
You may also want to check out the opportunities with Maersk. Depending on the role, places like Maersk will provide a platform to learn everything about chartering, bunker fuels, etc.
