"Are there things that I can do before entering uni/during 1st year to help me significantly increase my chances?"

Get off this forum right now and come back in a year or two. Enjoy your last year of HS and get some good, fun life experiences so you don't come off as a dud in interviews. That will seriously help you more down the line in interviews than getting some bs internship as a HS student...

Actually i know a hs senior who worked in GS IBD in 2007. If ur connected enough to get that, then u'll have a shot at JPM freshman program. Then u can get blackstone PE in sophomore year, followed by McKinsey in Junior year. And BAM, you can pretty much go anywhere you want for FT. But realistically, the chance of this happening is less than 1%.

Sooner or later we'll have some middle school kids coming up here asking whether babysitting or selling candy will help them better in recruiting.

Less than 1%? It's probably more like less than 0.01%.
