Thoughts on FRM (Financial Risk Management) exam? (Originally Posted: 12/22/2015)
'curious if anyone on here has taken the FRM (Financial Risk Management) exams (1 and/or 2).
Do you think that designation carries any weight in interviews?
How difficult is it from a prep point of view?
What prep materials are out there for that exam? I s there an equivalent of CFA schwesar notes for this?
Never heard of it personally. For these professional exams, the only one I really respect is the CFA but would be interested to hear others' thoughts
Schweser has notes for FRM. If you've done CFA then you'll find a lot of course overlap. According to a friend who has passed both levels, it's supposed to be easier than CFA. Designation weight depends on the kind of job and geolocation... (not much idea though)
What are you trying to do? This is more for risk management roles and is known to a lot less people. If you just want an edge in finance, CFA is the only way to go.
I am inquiring specifically about risk management roles... It looks like the FRM exam started only a few years ago and was wondering about how valuable it is.. e.g. if one does not have risk mgmt experience, can an FRM title lead to an interview call or not..
What type of risk management roles? I don't want to say FRM "doesn't mean shit", but I can tell you that I don't know a single person with the designation and my department shares a leader with our risk management org (so we sit together and interact quite a bit). Some have a combo of the CIA/CRMA even though they do not work in "audit"... makes sense since a large part of auditing is knowing where risks are but this is possibly related to previous careers that translate easily into risk management roles. There also are some CPAs and CISAs in that org, but those are probably from their prior "lives" before they joined the group and kept active as a "nice to have". I, personally, wouldn't waste my money but they are selling those things to someone so maybe others feel differently.
FRM vs PRM! (Originally Posted: 04/16/2010)
I was looking into the FRM designation from GARP and PRM designation from PRMIA. Both are for Risk Management, what is the difference ... I guess which one is better and why (is one organization better respected?) Also does anyone hold these designations, any comments? Was it worth the time? Did it contribute to your professional career development / student career development. Thanks!
PRM! Any risk job regards both credentials interchangeably. The extra money you pay for FRM goes towards their marketing etc.
How important CFA,FRM and other examinations are to bag lucrative jobs and offers in Hedge Funds/ Investment Banks? (Originally Posted: 06/05/2013)
Hi Guys Is appearing for CFA or FRM or other such exams really help in getting placed at big hedge gunds/investment banks/ finance firms? If yes then why and if not what are the skills and traits required to be a part of this industry?
many threads on the subject
id go with not important at all, but i think that majority would disagree
It depends...
If you want to do equity research or some type of institutional Asset Management it's almost a requirement to have it these days.
HFs - not really.
Investment Banks is a very broad term and you could be referring to anything.
Finance firms - You get a point for describing every financial enitity under the sun.
It can't hurt.
I don't think having the designation may be a detriment as it may differentiate you from another candidate with similar credentials.
Why are you getting an engineering degree if you want to work in finance?
Just fate I landed up here doing Engineering
