Mining & Metals Investment Banking
Hello all,
I shall be starting my B school soon. I have a solid background in Mining & Metals. I worked in mining operations followed by strategy consulting focusing exclusively in mining & metals companies. I am planning to target M&M groups in IBs.
Can anyone throw light on which banks are known for mining deals. Also where are they based at. I know there is a lot going on in Canada and Sydney but how about NYC. Also which specific banks.

Just to get it out of the way, YES I did use the search bar and YES I have seen M&I's M&M interview; didn't help me much.
I'm very interested in mining and metals banking. I've developed my own major on security issues, based mostly on natural resources economic security matters, and am minoring in geology. I am a Junior and have no internships yet but I am certainly doing a masters degree in either mining engineering (non-sciencey mineral economics focus) somewhere or mineral economics at Colorado School of Mines. I am doing a LOT of research on the industry, and will hopefully be able to leverage that somehow.
Really curious about the industry in general - does it recruit differently than generally is the case? Are they going to not care at all about my research/focus or will they care about it lots? What'll they think of a master's candidate, if at all (I know non-MBA master's degrees are just treated as analysts)? Do people know anything about Colorado School of Mines for IB? Any general comments on the field that are worth noting?
I know this is a lot but I have a ton of questions and no one at my school knows anything about this. Thanks a lot!
Which city do you plan to work in? Toronto would be the major city for metals and mining. The big 5 Canadian banks are the leaders in this industry so I would recommend joining one of them. There are a range of boutiques that specialise too. From what I see, as a mining banker you look at the sector from a financial capital markets point of view, less so from a geologist. Obviously if its a great project, than it will be highly attractive for m&a or financing. If you have the background than I think it will give you an edge over non geologists Some banks will have technical guys on hand that will review project geology etc that the normal finance major guys lack in expertise. Pm me for info
A number of banks run a lot of their mining and metals business out of Chicago in the US as well.
Good luck - the global mining & metals market will be in a down cycle for the next 2-4 years.
Truth
A number of m&a deals and ECM deals have been announced this year... Number of asset sale processes are still happening so their will be further announced divestitures later 2016. Let me know if you guys want a list off the top of my head

What are your views on working in the Metals and Mining M&A team at a BB.
I don't know what I want to do long term - will M&M give me too niche a skillset for general PE and fund opportunities? I understand the modelling is quite industry specific..?
Particularly interested in M&M in Citi (esp London) but any advice would be useful.
Thanks
