Computer Science at Top Target
Hello!
I'm a rising sophomore at a top target thinking about majoring in Computer Science or Economics (I find both super interesting). This summer I'm working at a technology firm as a software development intern. But I've been looking at Investment Banking and think that spending the summer as an IB intern might show me if that's the right career path. Most of my resume is geared towards CS right now, and to be honest I'm pretty new to all the terminology related to banking + finance. How would you advise me to proceed towards getting an IB internship with my background in CS?
Thanks so much! I really appreciate it!
Look for tech groups in SF/Menlo Park
Would you recommend applying to the summer analyst positions at firms such as Goldman Sachs or JP Morgan?
Yes, and MS
Yeah, definitely apply everywhere you can. TMT groups in particular will be interested in you

Getting an analyst internship as a CompSci major at a target school. (Originally Posted: 08/14/2015)
Hey, so I am considering a future career in finance. However, I do not plan on focusing strictly on finance. In college (I start this fall as a freshman) I plan on majoring in CS with a minor in finance.
I do not have any finance experience, but I do have work experience in CS. How improbable would it be for me to get a freshman or sophomore internship at, say, JPMorgan? Does being at a target school really (HYP) increase my chances of getting an interview even if I lack experience?
Thanks in advance for any thoughts on this.

It is possible, but internships outside of the typical junior summer analyst are generally geared towards diversity recruiting (this is not always true). Yes, being at a target school helps a lot.
Being at a target helps but no finance experience as a freshman still probably won't get you too many looks.
You should focus on getting any sort of finance experience you can as a freshman. You won't have much of a shot at a BB without it
Lose the gauges first.
Good to know that the industry is as vain as it is stereotyped to be.
