Trying to break into IBD in US as an international student (Originally Posted: 04/25/2014)
Harsh comments are always welcome. (Grammar, too wordy, etc) I go to W&M which is non-target.
Thanks in advance,

Getting into IB from overseas (Originally Posted: 02/07/2012)
Hello.
As some of you may read, I had my M&A offer 'withdrawn' from me the day before I was due to start.
I am willing to relocate to anywhere really for an opportunity. I'm presently based in Australia. The economy here is actually very strong (we didn't suffer a recession in the last 4 years). But IB is pretty bad as in other places.
How difficult would it be to get into any random boutique bank in USA or UK? I mean, would a bank ever hire someone based purely on Skype and phone interviews? Or would you have to pay your own way over for interviews? Also, is it difficult to get a work permit in the USA /Canada?
Cheers
Hi there!
I did the move from EU to US to work in IB back in the "glory days" of the "pre Lehman" and it was not easy even back then :)
Now, I believe that if there was one country in the world that really welcomes foreigners in FO positions it's the U.S. so you do have a chance to work here.
Working visas are generally H1B, they are companies' sponsored visas and from what I have been hearing recently, companies do not offer them as often as before.
There's a lot of research you have to do before moving and you can find a lot of information on internet, especially on forums. Even better - you should contact Australians or alumni that work overseas and speak with them!
Good luck!
Hi OP,
What I'm going to say is not intended to kill hopes - it's just reality check.
Like Heavy Bag said, obtaining an H1B is increasingly challenging, even for current international graduates who studied in a US college and have the benefits of using an OPT for 12-18 months. It is especially unlikely with boutiques and MM's since it is really costly for a bank to hire someone on an H1B.
That said, skype interviews are not uncommon and it is definitely possible (though not likely) to get an offer that way. The ultimate question is, how can you justify yourself for wanting to relocate?
