Getting summer internships
I am a Canadian student interested in consistently landing summer internships to build up my resume . I go to a target school in Canada i.e top 3 ( Queens ) but I don't attend the Undergrad BSchool, at this point in time I am studying Applied Economics and will be a sophomore this coming Fall. I had a 3.47GPA this year and I am currently still looking for an internship, however, INROADS may be setting me up with an something with a commercial bank probably on of the Big 5 up here, but that is not for sure. I did contact the department head for INROADS Canada directly so we shall see how that goes. My resume atm isn't filled with to much work experience if anything. I have consistent volunteer work ( Packaged clothes to be shipped to 3rd world countries for 3 years.), Big Brother/Big sister and some pretty good leadership experience ..for example being a Prefect for the entire male residence at my school. I want to know if there are any good techniques/ways to network to get myself an internship...not necessarily this year but at some point before I graduate so that I have a decent amount of work experience.
Any help is much appreciated.
A few things -- first, great that you are thinking about this early. I would definitely start angling for a boutique IB or BB PWM internship (or better, if you can!) for next summer now. As far as networking, there are a bunch of great threads you can search for.
I would round up your GPA to 3.5, since that's kind of the "magic" cutoff in the industry. Post your resume to Razume so we can take a look at it here and give you advice, too. Beyond that, start looking into your school's alumni directory (even if you aren't in the undergrad bschool look into those graduates too) and creating a list of all the names that could be potentially beneficial not just for internship-getting but also learning more about the industry.
If you show you're eager to learn more, are respectful, and ask lots of good questions, you will get far. If you go in with the only end-goal of getting an internship, you probably will be disappointed. Plus, don't discount that people in non-IB/trading positions at big banks might know someone who is, and can refer you.
