There are similar threads on this board, but this looks like a good place to start pooling all these questions. At my first interview I talked about macro trades with the PM. I had read up on the fund's investment philosophy, asked him about a few of the sectors he was looking at and the rest of the interview played out as a casual conversation about "where in the world would you like to invest?". I would recommend having a researched position in your pocket should you be put on the spot.
how did you find out about that firm's philosophy? google. or somewhere google can't reach? thx
Mostly by Googling the fund and the founder.

Macro Fund (2b) Interview (Originally Posted: 05/05/2015)
Hello all,
I got an interview with a $2b macro fund as a Research Analyst, based in NY. I've experienced lots of set backs in my career and this see as my big break. I do wish to join this hedge fund and could use any help in doing so.
Background - Top 10 US school bachelors, few years quantitative analyst at a smaller global macro fund, also in NY, right after school. I've a couple of magazine and research publications. Some of my software development is open source.
Any tips for the interview? My only drawback I see is that I do NOT have a live trading record. My strategies, while grounded in rigorous mathematics, are all backtested. To my benefit, I'm quite current with macro news even though my current position is quant, ie, I know the current interest rate climate.
Sincerely Yours, Will

Let me join this thread. A little bit different position - entry level global macro, small experienced team, about 2bn. My background: somewhat quantitative but not phD, in the role description they didn't go into that much detail but want good coding and math. Any tips for the interview? Thanks!
I guess since this is an entry level, some trade pitch is nice to have to show interest but probably they might want to check more my technical skills first.

Interview Entry Level Process at the big guns ie Tudor / Paulson / Viking / Moore / Soros
does anyone have experience with hedge fund interviews?
entry level??? I have never heard of those names looking at entry-level people...
...what will you be doing? Entry level encompasses a broad range of jobs. I work for a fund of the type you describe but never really interviewed for an entry level position.
To clarify the initial inquiry - what is the general structure/career progression like at global macro funds? What kind of interview questions would you ask a lower level candidate?
Very few hire entry level, especially not in this environment. If so entry point would prop. be research orientated.
first round interviews tend to be mostly fit based, informal.
What should you focus on for research el?
Moore and Paulson were hiring kids from my school last year.
how big into heavy stat analysis and regressions are such funds?
Paulson hired a kid straight out of yale undergrad in 2009. He's now an associate. But I imagine that was pretty rare.
I work at a Global Macro fund and would be happy to assist you, but first clarify what is the actual position. I say that because "Entry Level" doesn't really exist in this arena. You must come on with some sort of on the job experience.
Just noticed this post is 2 years old...
Well, since you've opened it back up, Bravo... How much job experience? I understand that very few undergrads get in, but would it be even possible or desired to do so with only two summers under your belt at a BB? Think strategy/macro research or trading on a macro product desk for summer. (Admittedly, a summer doing the former doesn't mean much.)
I'd love to hear your thoughts on such a thing, or if it's better to do strategy/macro research or trade first.
Yup ....summer doesn't mean much. It only shows you stayed busy towards your goal during the summer.
When I say on the job experience I mean you were actually a valuable member of a team and receiving a pay check. You will need a minimum of 3 years to even receive a worth while glance. Research or Trade? Do what your good at, there isn't some cookie cutter mold.
That's what I figured. Thought I'd give it a shot since people were mentioning some funds right after undergrad. Thanks for the advice.
Do you work at one of the large, well-known macro funds? Is this just the policy for your fund?
I know Bondarb mentioned previously that he started at a macro HF out of college as an assistant to some PMs, which gave him the chance to observe and learn from them. Someone said Moore takes interns, and I know Soros recruits at my school too. Anyone else have examples of what an intern or entry-level (as in right out of college hire) at a macro HF would be doing?
Thanks.
No I didnt. I started in the back-office. I was also a trading assistant for a PM at a smaller (non-macro) fund earlier in my career. It was absolutely great experience and led to everything that came after it. By the time I moved into the "macro World" I was already kind of a Sr Strategist, having worked on a bank prop desk for a few years in between the ops stuff and that job.
Remember, when they say "tell me a joke", all you gotta say is "advantage plus"
what am i missing? don't get the " advantage plus "
That's the name of Paulson's leveraged fund.
global macro informal interview (Originally Posted: 05/17/2013)
Hi,
I manage to get an informal interview with the CIO of a growing global macro fund and I'm looking for tips on current trends for that strategy or just general tips for global informal interview.
Thanks
usually you contribute to the community and then we help you out, but It's just an informational interview bro! The guy will ask how he can help you (which you should be upfront about) and go on from there.
Then ask him some questions that he'll most likely answer by talking about himself and why he's so good. Try to connect on a personal level and know your story well - don't try to pretend you know something you don't. He'll be able to sense the bullshit and can slam you hard if he wants to.
Hopefully I can make some positive contributions. I'm not in FO, just made it to middle office from IT.
Thanks for the info.
