Goldman Sachs background status

My background status has been upgraded to "preliminary approval" with Goldman Sachs ops in Salt Lake City. Anyone have a better idea of what this level entails....are they simply waiting for me to graduate? Thanx!

WallStreetSamoendz:
So does that mean I'm hired? When does it become "approval"? Forgive me for my ignorance!
Like the poster above, if you've already received your offer letter and accepted, you should receive an e-mail from HR stating that you've cleared the background check w/ a list of documents that you should bring with you on your first day. Relax its not like they've hired you for head of trading in NYC.

I received an offer letter, documents (drug test, transcript request, etc.) and all that other crap they need. I guess my question is....Am I hired? I had some things in my background that kind of worries me such as an aggravated assault with a beer bottle charge that got dismissed (mistaken identity) and a traffic ticket that turned into a warrant that I eventually paid off but forgot to disclose it on my application. My recruiter called me about it and I was totally honest with him. I feel my explanation went well and since then it got upgraded to 'preliminary approval'. I guess I'd feel better if they dropped the 'preliminary' part.

Although it's operations, this is a big deal to me. It may not be a front office thing but considering I came from a gang-infested, high-crime environment where our "role models" were pimps, gangsters, and drug dealers, this is quite an accomplishment I'd say. I'm pretty ambitious so maybe I'll get hired one day as head of trading in NYC (actually, i'm more ambitious than that).

Other than that, I appreciate the feedback. Thanks!

Do you have an accepted (your acceptance) offer letter with the salary detailed? If you replied and the background check is complete then you are in good shape. They check every line of your resume, if there are no problems there then you should get a start date - prepare to be fingerprinted on the first day.

Yes, you are hired. Nah, didn't try to imply anything like that. Just meant that they'll just make sure that the places and dates you said you worked are consistent and that you aren't a serial killer. Relax.

They have not sent me the offer letter yet stating that they are waiting for "approvals". It's been over a month now and I cant get any more info from the HR. Should I be worried?? Does any one know how long it takes for these approvals to come?

Ops in SLC is one of the the most prestigious positions in Goldman Sachs. It's possible your application is being delayed because you have some unpaid parking tickets. If this is the case, your only option is to get your record expunged through whatever means necessary.

I know this question is a few months old, but just in case some other people have the same question..

I went through the same process with GS HR. On Friday, they updated my status to 'Preliminary Approval' and then on Tuesday, I got a call saying that my background has been cleared. I think it meant that you are fine overall and there might be a few stuffs they need to double check on. But I think you should be fine 95%

Hello, I am currently in the Background process and it's been almost 4 weeks and my status still says "In-Progress". can you share how long it took to change over to Preliminary approval? also did you receive a start date before your status changed?

I sent my transcript release form through CARCO. Don't worry if it says "not received" because that update has to be manually entered into the system rather than the other "tasks" on HRWW that are automatically updated when you submit them. BTW, I started my background check on February 10th and just now received "preliminary approval"

If not already, you can ask GS for a contact at Carco. Call that contact, provide more information, ask their email and send them an electronic version of your transcripts. That will make it much easier.

That is what I did.

For all (relevant) interested, my hiring process was faster - although, in my case, I was the one who pushed back as much as possible.

I was interviewed over phone in June; invited for in-person the next week. Telephonic was 1 person (maybe more people, on mute I'd think); In person interviews were with 7 more people in the team, each ~30-45 minutes. I received an offer the same day evening (no kidding).

I asked for some time, and was told I could take until end of that week to think about it. They called me back end of that week, and I mentioned I needed more time again. So this went on for about a week, and then I spoke about needing more money. I was promised more bonus, and my base was increased by about $2,000 (I was fine anyways - my concerns was more about my Visa paperwork).

I verbally accepted the offer end of June. Started background first week of July, and it was completed about couple of days back. Background took literally 18 days. I was disappointed; I was pushing back and trying to delay it as much as possible (personal reasons, don't ask).

Next come the Visa stuff. I hope I can delay this as much as well.

I have been told that so far - my process has been very quick (compared to what - I don't know). One of my friends in my apartment community told me it took 7 months for her from verbal acceptance until day of joining. Background check alone, she mentioned - took ~3 months for her. No idea why/what/how, etc. Just getting it out there so that people can understand that there is no fixed timeline for this process.

So, to wind up: Hiring - telephonic interview - 1 day break of 7 days (based on my schedule) the week after - in person interview - 1 day - offer - same day - verbal offer - 10 days (delay on my end) - paperwork received - 2 days - paperwork sent - 4 days (delay from my end) - background check - 18 days - drug screen - 1 hour (?)

Will provide updates based on next steps as and when I complete them. HTH someone who is expecting to go through this.

EDITED to add: Forgot to mention that mine also showed "Preliminary Approval". But, I received both emails and phone calls from the HCM / HR team congratulating me and confirming that I cleared background check process.

So, don't worry about 'terminologies'. If in doubt, ask your HR. If you are undergoing background check, it means there is someone at GS that is contacting you, or that you are communicating with. Ask / talk to them for any questions. They are (surprisingly), very accomodating and understanding and will help you as much as possible.

Hi, This is for a internship position! In their NYC office, I completed the background check form by the beginning of this month! thanks
what I find for interns (this is probably also true for everyone else), your HR rep at GS is very helpful. just drop him/her an e-mail asking what it means, they get back to you within hours and probably provide a more reliable answer than what you'd get here.
