Good Follow Up Letter

Dear _______,

Thank you so much for taking the time to present at the ______ Business School tonight! I really appreciated the opportunity to learn more about the financial industry and particularly about ___Bank Name____. During the presentation I was very impressed with what I learned of the culture and the work environment of the firm, especially with your role within the ____________ group. I'm very excited to learn a bit more about ______Bank Name_____ and especially about your role in the firm. I was wondering if you have the time for a phone conversation or an in person chat sometime in the next two weeks? I would love to learn a bit more about you and the firm at your earliest convenience. I can be reached______phone number_______or via email at ________________. Thank you very much for your time and consideration.

Best,

I'm wondering if this letter is too long or too complicated for a follow up or first time introduction. Additionally, Is it too soon to ask for a few minutes in person or on the phone after informational session.

Thanks for the advice.

It's a bit too wordy. Try something like this (obviously change this to match your situation):

"Hi Lloyd Blankfein,

Thank you for presenting at HBS tonight. I enjoyed the presentation, especially the the part where you discussed Brexit's effect on European M&A. I am very much interested in a career in IB and was wondering if you might have some time this or next week to hop on the phone to discuss your experience at GS and the IB industry in particular. Thanks.

Best,

Thank you for the reply. From looking at your version of a follow up letter, it seems very informal in comparison. Do you think it's better to be more formal and wordy vs very conversational and informal. I want to get the impression across that I took the time to write the message before sending it.

Oh wow haha. I'm currently a Sophomore undergraduate studying at a semi-target. (Every bank recruit at my school, but they only take 5-10 people a year per bank) I think I'll have a PWM Merrill Lynch lined up for the summer, and I did study abroad last summer at London School of Economics. I'm just a bit intimidated by all the senior people I've been meeting to be that informal.
