Google, IBM, Deloitte: Intern offers on the table

Hello!

I am a current sophomore at a top 3 university, majoring in Computer Science, and hoping to break into the big 3 consulting firms for a junior summer internship.

I have offers from IBM (software engineering) and Deloitte (tech consulting), and Google (biz dev) as well as a product management with a top firm in Europe.

My only past intern experience has been in finance with a fund of funds in Switzerland.

In my eyes, the offers on the table are equally appealing, since I've not had much work experience in the past.

My question is:

Which position do you see as most appealing from a big 3 consulting recruiting perspective?

Thanks guys!

Take Google. Assuming you want to do strategy consulting, biz dev will be a nice bridge for you away from programming. Plus it's a kick-ass place to be and has very nice prestige factor these days.

IBM: Great rep for engineering of course but if you want to do consulting, a summer of coding won't really make you more appealing to a strategy firm.

Deloitte: I don't think tech consulting here would be value-add enough for you, especially coming from a "top 3" university.

google and its not particularly close. i think that most if not all will advise you the same thing.

you will arguably learn more, work with interesting people and round out your profile + better name, work much more relevant to strategy consulting, can parlay google into virtually anything down the line if you change your mind vs. tech consulting/software engineering are somewhat "tie" you to those specific fields

The only reason you would even think about IBM is if you were planning to do a PhD and do research down the road (i.e. they do some pretty cool stuff with AI, as evidenced by Watson, and they are doing some pretty ground breaking research in nanotech if you had studied ChemE, BioE, etc). But a software engineering internship is probably IBM tech consulting, which = bitch work.

Deloitte is a definite no.

Google is the obvious winner, particularly with your stated goal of MBB consulting.

Google all the way. I worked at Deloitte Consulting for a year. Tech there literally means SAP and Oracle projects, not great fun. IBM would be similar but with more of a sales component (i.e. selling IBM architecture and systems as part of engagements).

"More Cowbell! I still need more Cowbell!"

As a Former IBM Intern:

Google > IBM > Deloitte

I would say the one caveat is, if you were accepted into IBM's Extreme Blue internship program since they do some pretty amazing stuff and is extremely competitive. But considering you're a sophomore that's probably not the case (they focus on MBAs, grad students, and really crazy amazing jr-sr undergrads)
