GPA needed for IB interviews/jobs

Hey there,

I am a junior at a top public university with a good undergraduate business program (think UMich Ross, Berkeley Haas, UVa McIntire) looking at SA positions at Investment Banks. I know GPA is very important when it comes to getting an interview and was wondering what a good GPA is needed nowadays in order to land an interview for an investment banking position at a good bank (bb, mm, elite boutiques, etc.). I currently have a 3.71 and am curious about what you guys think is the minimum gpa to obtain an interview in the field. Have you/are you from one of the colleges I listed and heard about what usually the cutoff is for an interview? Or just any general comments regarding this?

Thanks!

@Waymon so are you telling me that everyone above 3.5 at schools like mine gets interviews? I feel like that's not the case. Usually the cutoffs are pretty low and you need much higher than that at most schools other than like Wharton where a 3.5 is fine

No. A high GPA is a just a check in the box. There is a lot more - some argue that previous experience outweighs a low GPA, knowing people at the bank certainty helps as well. If you submit your app online with a 3.71 and no prior work experience, there is a very low chance that you will get looked at.

However, if the bank recruits at your school or if you network with an alum, your GPA will not really matter as long as it is above a 3.5

You likely won't get an interview from a BB or EB from just applying online. My suggestion is to network. You have a competitive GPA, but if you think that's all it is going to take, then you are in for a rude awakening. Only trying to be honest, as I don't want you to not succeed because you did not realize what you needed to do.

Not everyone with a 3.5 will just get an interview. Best of luck.

@"henchman" Thanks for your honesty. All the companies (BB's and EB's) recruit on campus here and have resume drops. Is that different from "just applying online"?

Also, I do have a pretty well-rounded resume in addition to that GPA. It seems like my GPA is the main low point when it comes to this. What GPA is usually needed to get these interviews?

The advice on WSO regarding the GPA you need to be competitive is generally skewed too low. At any school (even Harvard or Wharton) with highly competitive OCR, you really should be shooting for 3.8+ to be competitive. It is simply a matter of numbers. There may be 400 applicants for 30 first-round interview slots. Of course there are factors beyond GPA that impact your resume, and within those 30 slots there will be some room for referrals, but largely you will want to be in the ballpark of the top ~10% of your class.

The advice that you hear often - that as long as you have a 3.5+ you are fine - is not the reality of how OCR works at target schools.

@"Extelleron" I agree with what you are saying, kids with 3.5 at my school rarely get interviews at those banks. It's generally those that have around 3.8. I thank you for your honestly.

@"Another" I am more concerned with landing the interview because I would say that I am very good when it comes to actually interviewing. I'm more of a people-person so I tend to do well in all interviews, whereas my grades aren't that good as you can see from my GPA. Therefore, I am trying to focus on just getting the GPA high, cause I'm not worried at all when it comes time to interview

When there are thousands of applications for a few spots, networking what gets your resume a chance. If your GPA is not up to par, that might prevent that. Having above a 3.7 is absolutely fine though. It's a check in the box that you're eligible. Other than that it's not going to make you stand out. Go network.
