Graduating Dec. 2012 Hofstra Finance MBA

I'm 28 and have been working for a Fortune 500 company on LI doing some accounting analyst work and basic Financial Analyst work (Budgeting, forecasting, variance commentary, etc.)

I will be graduating in Dec. 2012 from Hofstra with my MBA in Finance and am looking to break-in to any Finance firm to get some experience. In the real world, I want to see what I like don't like and what i'm good at. I liked my classes dealing with Investments and Private Equity... I have a decent cumlative avg of 3.5. Without a CFA is it possible to break in anywhere? I was also considering the CMA exam to add a certification to my name and in the future if i'm hunting for CFO type of roles.

How did any of you determine what are of finance you wanted to hone in on and break into the industry?

Any thoughts, suggestions would be gladly welcome.

Hey man,

I would recommend trying to find a niche, as in working for a biotech company in a finance position then trying to shoot to PE

have you talked to any of the people in the corp. dev. department at your company?

I don't know what industry the company is in, but if it's an f500 they probably have some sort of m&a group. If you're interested in investments and being involved in buying businesses, that should be somewhat appealing to you.

by the way, did you go to hofstra for undergrad as well? they're not really known outside of long island...

I went to James Madison Unviersity (JMU) for Accounting and graduated in 2006. I know Hofstra is not 'THAT' well known its just that my company pays for the tuition so its a "Free" MBA.

I will see if my company has an M&A group, but if they do...its not that big. There is not much of that in my industry which i'm looking to leave anyway.

let's not kick the shit out of him, what's done is done.

from what i've seen online, there are a lot of boutiques on long island. and most people here know someone how goes or went to hofstra, so it's really not that bad.

although i don't know shit really, I would think you'd have better luck getting work at another f500 on LI in corp dev, rather than a bank or large firm in nyc.

Do you happen to have a list of boutiques in LI or some of the bigger names? I'm finishing my MSF at a big state school and want to head back to LI.

Thanks for all the feedback. I'm trying to be realistic with my expectations upon graduation and really need to focus on what I want and what my BEST options are. I just can't believe how fast time flies when you're trying to plan a career. I'm 28 now with basic work experience and I feel i'm way behind the curve.

Any suggestions on what I can do to differentiate myself more?
