Greatest Streak?

Ok Monkeys, What do you cracked out insomniacs think is the most impressive streak in the 4 major sports?

Baseball: Cal Ripken 2,652 games in a row (19 years)

Football: Brett Favre 297 Straight NFL Games (20 years)

Basketball: AC Green 1,100+ NBA Games (13 years)

Hockey: Doug Jarvis 964 NHL games (12 years)

Rixon Gracie, won more than 400 fights in a row

Whatcha got, fellas?

Damn, sorry I missed that. I would add it if I was able to edit my Original Post...good look though

"Hélio Gracie disputed Rickson's claim to have had over 400 fights. According to Hélio, Rickson has only competed in fights that are commonly known and reported: the two against Rei Zulu and those that took place in Japan. Hélio alleged that Rickson uses practice and amateur bouts to obtain a number over 400, and that if he counted his fights like Rickson does, he would have in excess of one million." -Wikipedia

I'd say playing through injuries is ballsy, but not getting injured is better. Both Cal and Brett are HoF caliber players, but Brett's been killing his teams the last couple years, and has behaved like a prima donna.

As a longtime Packers fan...I gotta say Cal.

I got your back happy. Also, you definitely can edit a post. I did it before I was a mod.

"Greed, in all of its forms; greed for life, for money, for love, for knowledge has marked the upward surge of mankind. And greed, you mark my words, will not only save Teldar Paper, but that other malfunctioning corporation called the USA."

Cal Ripken hands down....the man had to go out on the field daily during the season. You can make the argument that other sports are more demanding but being out on the field every game every day had to be a challange. Not to mention, he played at shortstop, reletively demanding position.

General Disarray:
A streak that i think will last forever is Joe Dimaggio's 56 game hit streak. Talk about impressive.

Agreed...Cal's isn't going anywhere either with the way they give guys days off and stuff now

You missed THE ONE Hap

Glen Hall's 502 consecutive games in goal, this was in the days of the old NHL with 6 teams when goalies played without a mask and their padding was essential a tablecloth. This guy had THOUSANDS of stitches, broke his jaw several times, concussions, knocked out teeth, etc and never left a game. There was a situation where he got his face stepped on and was sticking his tongue through his cheek throughout the remainder of the game due to the laceration...NEVER LEFT THE ICE.

As remarkable as some of the other streaks are, they are at least feasible in terms of being matched. Nobody could ever (even in theory) come close to matching Glen Hall's streak.

There was an awesome article about this in Sports Illustrated about a decade ago before Ripken broke the record and it made everything else look like a warm-ups in comparison.

Aryton Senna had 5 consecutive (1989-1993) Monaco Grand Prix victories.

In 1976, James Hunt broke the sound barrier through Eau Rouge only to retire before the event finished... following the race he had sex with three Belgian nurses at the clubhouse near La Source.

Damn Midas, I'd never heard of that but it almost doesn't matter that I missed it since, I think most will agree after hearing that, that this just became a debate for second place...that's insane

Id go with Hall, after hearing that. After that, Gracie. He wasn't a part of a team sport where others could pick up the slack if he was slacking. He won every single match on his own against guys more than twice his size in some cases. Definitely a badass

It's Rickson Gracie, and his "fights" are mostly glorified sparring matches.

It's obviously Brett Favre hands down. He's a little white dude running around a field full of 6'6" 300 lb. gorillas that are trying to kill him. The fact that he's still alive after 20 years is fucking amazing.

Favre is 6'2, 225 lbs, not exactly a small guy.....besides P.Manning will break Favre's record

Favre's is the least impressive IMO.

  1. he plays QB, the most protected position in any sport. he gets hit maybe 1/10th as often as every other player on the field minus the punter and kicker

  2. there are way less football games per season than any of the other major sports, and the seasons are the shortest

  3. you can play QB with a broken foot, a broken arm assuming it's not your throwing arm, and other injuries that would put you out of commission for just about every other sport

Favre's streak is amazing, but I'd have to say Ripken or Dimaggio is the most impressive. Baseball is less physically demanding, but you play 162 games a season. You're almost playing everyday from early April until October. Plus throw in spring training or post season.

How many times do you think Ripken had a situation where he was sick, had a banged up knee, etc,. and played in a meaningless game anyway? Think about how difficult it would be to shake off an injury and go out and play some shitty team like the Royals, in an empty stadium on a Tuesday afternoon in August. He could have taken a day off and no one would have cared.

chocolate_boy_wonder:
None of the above...the greatest streak ever is AC Green staying a virgin for his entire career as a member of the Lakers. Can you imagine sitting alone reading your Bible while Magic was contracting HIV down the hall?

Winner winner chicken dinner

lol did u see the Vikings tonight? Are you sure they are a better team without him? Are u aware just last year he threw for 34 touchdowns and just 7 picks en route to leading them to the NFC championship game? I am no where near a Brett Farve enthusiast but someone who respects greatness, and appreciates the physical strain of football, this is the greatest streak in sports. If we are talking about pure longevity this is the greatest streak ever, no doubt.

Happy, great topic.

I've got one that I think is worthy of being a real streak and that's NHL Shutouts. We're not talking Martin Brodeur with his 104 shutouts. We're talking consecutive shutouts and how long they lasted for.

Similar to 3M's Glen Hall comment, there was an original 6 Goalie, Alec Connel who played for Ottawa that had a record of 461 minutes and 29 Seconds. While that's a hell of a record that went from the 1927-1928 seasons, we're talking 7 Games and 41 Minutes, 29 seconds into game 8, the way the game was played in the Original 6 era was not as conducive to scoring and there were no forward passing. That said, I nominate Brian Boucher of the Phoenix Coyotes for his consecutive 332 Minutes and 1 Second of shutout time during the 2003-2004 season for this list. Getting consecutive shutouts is difficult. Imagine the degree of difficulty to pull of 5 shutouts in a row and go 32 minutes into the next game without letting up a goal.

Now that's a streak that will be hard to break.

Individual - Cap Ripken... I remember in 1993 after what is dubbed the "Seattle Brawl" the streak was in jeopardy but sprained ankle and all he still fought through.

UCLA Men's Basketball 88 games

Streak started January 30, 1971 (defeated UC Santa Barbara 74-61) following 89-82 loss to Notre Dame, January 23, 1971 Streak ended January 19, 1974 (lost to Notre Dame 71–70)

Yes, they won 88 games in a row then lost the next game by 1 point.

High school football 151 games — De La Salle High School

Streak started September 11, 1992 (started by Merced High School) Streak ended September 4, 2004 (ended by Bellevue High School)

Team- Arsenal FC (London), 2003-04 Premiership, 38 games - no loss --> Champions

That's 49 games actually.

Long-suffering Arsenal supporter here. We're a streak of piss now unfortunately and Manchester United looks set to equal our record.

I am retarded and put Rixon for some reason; granted, some of those fights were just sparring matches he counted in his win column, a significant amount were hard fought battles in the Jungle with guys who seriously outweighed him. I did Jiu Jitsu for 3 1/2 years before i sold my soul and i don't care how good you are, winning that many fights is unbelievable. His brother Royce won the first UFC and the entire Gracie family always says how Rickson is hands down the best Gracie son ever (Rickson would not compete in UFC because they would not pay him enough). Rickson is one of the best athletes of all time, watch "Choke" the documentary and then get back to me about streaks....

well it may be an odd "streak"... but id personally say the Buffalo Bills getting to 4 superbowls in a row...

as competitive as the sport of football is, with injuries, player trades, retirements, etc, making it to one superbowl is amazing, back to back is super rare... three is next to impossible... but FOUR!

Oh yeah, and to lose them all as well! 1990-1993 is hard for buffalo fans, but its an amazing streak that has just as much of a likelihood of getting broken as Cals/Bretts.

Either the amount of times the word "fuck" and derivatives of it are used in The Boondock Saints or Jack Bauer going 8 seasons enduring every possible thing you can imagine and not dying while never sleeping (remember the show is an entire day 24 hour format and you never see him sleeping!)

Wow... Resevoir Dogs has really hung in there on the top 25 films with the word "Fuck" being used. That's saying something for a film that's almost 20 years old. And of that list alone, it is tied for top 3 films in terms of the dialogue used. Maybe only Goodfellas has better use of the word Fuck than the other films in the grand context of things.
