Group Placement & Deal Experience
I just got my group placement for IBD and am really disappointed in the group I will be in. It is a group that I simply have no interest in, and the worst part is that its a very niche group so the skill sets are pretty specialized. The bright spot is that they have a lot of dealflow in this industry.........my question is if I am trying to lateral over to another bank and another industry group after a year or so, will having this specialized year of experience hurt me or will that be made up by having actual deal experience. Also... Is it common for people to switch banks because they hate the group they are in?

Did you get placed in FIG,
Did you get placed in FIG, Chemicals, or Energy?
haha yeah FIG
haha yeah FIG
What group did you want to be

I really wanted to be in Real
I really wanted to be in Real Estate/Gaming/Lodging, TMT, or Consumer/Retail.....I would have even preferred energy to FIG, this is honestly the group I wanted to be in the least....any thoughts on what I can possibly do to get out of this group?

I was recently placed into a group that I wasn't terribly interested in, and I contacted bankers that I interviewed with in my absolute favorite group, needless to say, after a few days I got an offer for my favorite group. The bankers went to bat for me and as such it worked out. This is for Full-Time btw. How recent was this placement made for you?
You are woking at JPM?

Contact HR. That's your best bet. Other than that, you might find that you really enjoy working with financial institutions.

HR won't do a thing. Your best bet is to contact any bankers you know in your more favorable groups. Good luck.
I am 100% certain I will not
I am 100% certain I will not enjoy working with financial institutions, I interned for an ER analyst in this industry and wanted to kill myself during the summer and found the other industries (RE & Consumer) so much more interesting and enjoyable.
Unfortunately I don't know anyone high up in the group I want (only interviewed with analyst and associate in superday)....and when HR called me to tell me my group she made it seem like the guys in FIG kind of requested me to be in their group (I really hit it off with them in interviews) so if I do reach out to HR and they can't do anything I do run the risk of my group finding out I tried to get out and don't want to make a bad impression before I even start......should I even attempt to ask HR?...It seems like I'm kind of screwed, so should I just suck it up and do FIG and try to move banks after some time?.......can you guys elaborate on how common/realistic it is for someone to change banks because of the group? (I have decent contacts at other banks and would even use a headhunter to get me out of this group)
are there any alumns at the
are there any alumns at the bank? you could try calling them and they could put you in contact with people in other groups.
just a word of caution: you
just a word of caution: you don't want to start a position by hating your group. it seems like you will be in jpm, and people on this board are from jpm fig and might not like the fact that you don't like the group. especially that you have given information about ur past. just keep mum and be happy you got placed in a group with great dealflow and not in public finance or CAPSAS.

I do not know anyone who
I do not know anyone who switched banks because they didn't like the group they were placed in. Switching groups within a bank is not as uncommon as you may think (but the new group will usually require a two year committment, so you are committing yoruself to 3 years as analyst). Switching banks because of your group is rather extreme.
