Goldman Sachs Real Estate Finance Group Interview

Hi Guys,

I have an interview next week with GS for a Real Estate Finance Group - Capital Markets Analyst position. I was wondering if anyone has had experience with this group. What is the interview like? Is it mostly technical questions or fit questions? Is there one area to really focus on? The experience/ skills they listed seem pretty vague, so I'm not really sure what to expect.

In terms of my background, I spent the past 2 years working for a rating agency in the CMBS new issuance group. In college I spent a few summers interning for a small CMBS issuer.

Any info/advice would be greatly appreciated.

I just interviewed for something similar (not RE, though) at the above-stated firm. There will be technicals, but you should be fine on the technicals with your background. They are rarely difficult in my experience.

More important: You need to know your story cold. You need to be able to explain why you want to join them, and stick to your guns when they question your [lack of] logic. You need to be able to explain what they do before they tell you what they do.

Thanks for the info, Cries.

It seems like some people put a lot of stock into technicals, but in my interviewing experience I've only gotten a few basic CRE/CMBS questions. The majority of my interviews have been all fit based.

With that said, does anyone have any info on what this group is like? Hows the culture? I have a basic idea from some limited interactions with the team while working on some of their deals, but if anyone could provide some more color, that would be great. Thanks!

Hey Dman33 how'd the interview go? I have an interview with them as well. I've heard that it's very difficult to tell if you do well or not, that would drive me crazy... Any insight would be greatly appreciated, good luck to you!

The REFG in Irving, Texas is pretty selective. Networked with them during this past summer because I was located in the office as well in a different division. They received over 1000 applications for this position and only accepted 1 full time analyst.

What type of back ground do you guys have? Any chance you could PM a resume so I can take a look. I think GS might be a bit out of my reach but I still want to give it a try.

Dr Barnaby Fulton:

I interviewed for this job back in the spring...I posted a similar question in both the RE Finance and IB forums before interviewing and got almost no response (thanks WSO). PM me.

well if you want to add to WSO you should post your info here so future people can see it.

Have an interview coming up. Thoughts on preparation? Anyone gone through this?

Would appreciate it, thanks.

Had an interview with them, but didn't get it. Are you a college grad? Or do you have work experience? Also it would have been better if you posted this in the real estate finance section.

Current undergrad w/ real estate and banking experience. Could you shed some light on the nature of the interview?

I am assuming you have some RE experience. PM me. I can give you some tips.
