Opinions on Goldman Sachs Investment Partners
Hi everyone,
Just wondering what are your views on Goldman's hedge fund in terms of growth prospects, exit options, culture and the people at the firm.
I was a senior in college and took a year off to do internships. Did a 6 month healthcare PE internship (mm) and now doing a 6 month internship in opportunistic credit with a big name PE shop (think KKR/Blackstone/TPG etc).
Problem is, I won't be converted at my current firm (which is understandable) and the job market is really bad at the moment (most IBs just converted their summer interns with no to little space for full-time). I'm totally not interested in Wealth management and most other stuff, which is why I'm considering this opportunity to do an internship with GSIP in London (I am currently based in SEA).
I have not gotten the offer and will continue to try my best and I hope that my interests are aligned with GS.
Thank you for the help.
GSIP is fine, it's still going to be around and the team is actually really good - even though returns may not have been stellar in the past. The bigger issue for you, however, is that the team is incredibly small and they've only taken on a couple people in a few instances out of undergrad in the past.
Deleted.
GSAM, in general, hires interns with the intent of conversion.

I'm trying to find out a little more about GSIP - does anyone have any information? Specifically i. What's the normal route to get in (lateral, internal transfers, straight out of school...) ii. Offices
Much appreciated if anyone can shed any light on this rather secretive group!
Lateral and internal transfers, mostly the later. AFAIK, Manuel Stotz is the only person they've ever taken from undergrad, and he started working with one of their new funds part time before graduating. http://www.linkedin.com/pub/manuel-stotz/5/704/54b
Holy shit, dude graduated in 2.5 years and basically interned for two straight years at top firms? Pretty ridiculous resume...
Dude looks like a baller.
They had one intern this summer and she was a rhodes scholar.
So you're saying it's pretty easy to get a job then?
how did stotz get a summer gig at Rothschild m&a as a before even starting college
Stelios Scholarship - need based scholarship. So he is somone who has a very strong skills set. Extremely impressive. He has networked very hard. PSD Kid. Simly Bravo !!!!!!!!!!
Where do their internals come from? IB? S&T or Research? Presume that this fund is a multi-strat - i.e. they need investment analyst type people in addition to prop trader type people? I'm in PE now but this fund looks like a very good place to be...
most come from banking.
I'm under no illusion that I could break into GSPS anytime soon, but does anyone know how people typically get into that group? The fact that they basically invented merger arb (Gus Levy days) is kind of ridiculous.
They hired more people this year. 3 of my classmates (and that's just from one school in Canada) are interning at GSIP this summer. I don't think they hire back for fulltime though, so you'll probably have to pay your banking dues first.
^ Yup, GS Investment Partners apparently took couple kids from Ivey this year.
double post
Does anyone know the compensation for GSIP?
would like to know as well!
I have an interview with GSIP trading role. Any suggestions on what to expect?
Should be more specific. What type of trading role & which group under IP.
Joyce Meng was the intern last summer. She graduated with a 4.0 from Wharton and is a Rhodes Scholar, just got two masters degrees from Oxford. She's going to be working there full time next month.
absolutely ridiculous resume http://www.joycemeng.com/joycemengresume.pdf

What's the compensation figure for GS Investment Partners?
why does it matter??? who in the world would turn it down?
If its lower than SSG or PS, I think there will be people who turn it down.
so there are people who have, without prior experience like you, offers from all 3?
I really dont think so. Plus, who cares about starting money in these groups? Just makes no sense.
If you have to ask on WSO, then it's highly doubtful that you are qualified/well-connected enough to garner an offer from them.
Feel free to prove us wrong.
In the mean time,
GSIP, SSG, banking, s&t are all the same salary for entry level hires.
^ That's not true.
^ I have prior experiences. Just because I didn't get an offer yet DOES NOT mean I can't ask.
Maybe it doesn't make sense to you, but it prbly makes sense to a bunch of other people.
Get an offer and find out for yourself.
I honestly dont think someone who can get into these groups would care about starting salary... But ok maybe someone on these boards knows.
Man, why such attitude from everyone towards the OP (choice of username aside)? He is simply asking a question that many of us would be curious to know - simply for curiosities sake if nothing more.
People need to relax on here. FFS.
agree with Logan. chill.
Ask the girl from that ridiculous resume thread.
I swear, every time someone asks about salary at places like KKR, Silverlake, GS TMT, IP etc etc all you idiots come out with the same shit: "Get an offer first" or "I doubt you could get an offer anyway" - Instead of making asinine comments about something you have no clue about, why don't you just give the guy a straight answer.
waste of time
nothing wrong with being curious...i'd say that clearly most people replying here dont know the answer (not that noone on the site does)
its a pretty reasonable thing to be curious about...especially onsdiering someone good enough to get a job at gsip probably could get one of the entry level jobs at one of the top HFs which all pay very very well from what i've heard...
also for all of you ppl insulting the OP...i personally know/have spoken to several people at these types of places (GSPS/SSG etc) but I wouldn't just flat out ask what their comp was...if i had a question like that I would probably come here..
my prediction would be that all in comp at this type of place would have to be 150k+ maybe around 200k to be competitive
maybe the base is the standard 70k, but you see what i mean
