Guides to prepare for Real Estate Interviews
Hello Brethren,
I have a few interviews coming up and I was wondering if there are any "gold-standard" guides to prepare with? I'm thinking something analogous to the "Vault Guide to investment banking interviews".
So far, I've had trouble finding much after scouring the web. The best I've found is Joe's blog, "A Student of the Real Estate Game". Would love if anybody had any suggestions or could point myself (and other monkeys) in the right direction in order to best prepare...
To provide some color, my interviews are
- Acquisitions at PERE Top 50 MF REPE fund
- Development at PERE Top 50 MF shop
- Investment Sales at a top Brokerage
If anybody is feeling extremely generous with his (or her) insight, I would love to hear any opinions that people would have to the upside/downside of the 3 different roles.
Your interviews will likely be less formal then ib interviews so I don't know how helpful an IB guide will be. Just prepare for the basic questions: - Why RE? - Walk through CF in specific property type(s) that the team you're interviewing with handles - Waterfall (might ask you to model it out....happened to me) - Why invest in a given area? - Industry trends - might ask you what a good investment might be (property type/market) - Past deals (if you interned in a transactional group), or past internship experience
As per the pros/cons for the three groups , it will vary greatly depending on what firm they are. If you want to PM me details on the interviews, I can provide feedback on each role.
Thanks REA! I PMed you.
For anyone else who can weigh in on the matter...
Overall, I am most concerned with what roles will provide (a) the most learning (b) provide an experiential basis that leads to the best exit opps
Hate to ask this, but what are the exit opps
Hate to ask this as well, but what level could I expect comp to be?
I would like to get my MBA at a school with a top RE program. Would any of these roles lend themselves particularly well for pursuing graduate school?
Guides on Real Estate Careers (Originally Posted: 04/03/2013)
Hey guys, currently an analyst at a buy side debt shop and interested in pursuing a career in real estate. Not exactly where yet, but think I might like getting involved in PE or high end/luxury development. I'm not trying to get ahead of myself so if there are any suggested readings (web, blogs, books) on the subject, I would much appreciate a point in the right direction. If anyone has the vault guide on real estate careers, I would ask for that as well. I have the more sought after guides pertaining to banking and such that I will be happy to trade. Thanks for your help.
