Anyone heard of Novus Partners?

Hey everyone,

Recently came across this company called Novus Partners and am very curious as to what they are about. If anyone can shed some light on what these guys actually do (I've read their website and am still a little confused), that'd be awesome. Seem to me to be a sort of FoF set up, however I don't think that they have any investments. Also don't think that they are anything like an independent research broker or the like.

Any insight would be great, thanks!

I took a look at their site and also asked my friend about it who works for an analytics company. And its pretty much what I suspected. Its not a Fund of Funds. It's a data crunching analytics company that does analytical work on hedge funds and sells that data to FoF or family office, and other institutional investors. But the analysis is pure number/data related, it looks as if they do not look into qualitative aspects of the fund's strategy (which I think is far more important). So you kind of nailed it when you said that they have zero investments and that they are nothing like a research broker.

If you work for these guys, you will be staring at excel spreadsheet w/ zero human interaction, other than with the guy next to you. But according to my friend, their starting salary isnt bad.. $80k plus bonus that would push you slightly above the six figure mark.

Hope that helps.

Yes, very very helpful. Thank you.

They said on their career page that they "have" analysts in their program sit on CFA L1 and reimburse for costs if you pass.

To dig a little deeper, would an entry level position at a place like this be a good step towards Equity or Credit Research? Would like to hopefully set myself up for ER or CR at a bank down the road and then try and jump to HF. I am a little behind the curve due to my school name, grades, etc., but am determined to make it work somehow.

I guess what I'm getting at, is this a FO kind of role? Or just some more technical MO/BO work that has been outsorced to Novus?

Thanks again!

Watersign,I actually work on the Analytics team at Novus and can help you understand what we do. We work on teams where the majority of our day is spent performing analytical work, interacting with each other and interacting with clients. We don't sell data, and we are not an outsourced Fof, we help our clients to generate insights from our analysis (and our analysis is really unique) delivered on an online platform (yes, we use excel but that's not all we do). At Novus, we focus on skill set analysis- how do managers repeatedly perform in a variety of areas, for example, stock picking- our analysis combines qualitative and quantitative factors in a way that no one else in the industry does, which is why we have the kind of clients and growth that we do. Our clients are high profile hedge fund managers as well as universities, pension funds, sovereign wealth funds, hospitals and any other hedge fund allocator who wants to understand skill sets and improve.

Novus is a very high-performance culture, and you are given a lot of responsibility, but it definitely pays off- I don't know anywhere else that would give the kind of access to such high profile clientele so early in your career or the opportunity to make such a difference at the firm. However, it is extremely competitive to get hired by Novus, and their hiring process is fairly rigorous. Once you're in, though, it's incredibly refreshing to be working alongside really brilliant and passionate people. I'm consistently impressed by my colleagues. It's also a really fun, young environment where the firm is innovating and improving the platform every day, and the team is growing all the time. It is small enough to still feel like one big family, and several of us go out for drinks after work on Fridays together. We have a ping pong table and can wear jeans to work (but not to client meetings). It's a really different place to work from most financial firms or analytics companies, and you can tell there's a huge focus on talent and keeping employees happy and fulfilled. It is no longer a startup but it still has the startup vibe- we are building something really big and everyone is given the opportunity to participate.

In terms of equity or credit research, this is probably not the best starting point but quite frankly, this isn't exactly a stepping stone type of role- the firm invests in you and gives you a clear career trajectory and training to work your way up to the top internally, and there is virtually no turnover.

It's the latter. It will not help you in anyway to (well, never say never... but you get the point lol) attain the FO, ER,CR role at a bank. But, if Novus is one of few opportunities available to you, it pays well and at least you will be getting your foot in the door w/in the finance industry, no matter how technical and MO/BO role it is.

i know there was a post on it, but i want more input from people that may have any. most of the people that commented on that thread were just people who gave their own assumptions of the company. i want someone who actually has experience with them and can maybe know the actual base salary for first years.

Is this in NYC? I had a phone interview with them in June. Got a weird vibe off of that and read somewhere that its a lot of hours and number crunching. I wasn't very interested so I just straight up asked what the salary was and she said around 60k which is peanuts in NYC

Yeah, they're only in NYC. I saw that post too, but I want to see if more people would have input to the company.

60k excluding bonuses isn't really peanuts in NYC for entry level at a small company. But it is an analytics company so the number crunching part may be right.

I'd appreciate if other people can give me some insight. Thanks.
