CMT as a complement to CFA
I just took level II of the CFA a little over a month ago, and I'm thinking about taking the CMT as a complement to that. I currently work in Product Control, but I want to break into trading. Is the CMT worth the time/money as a complement to the CFA? Does the CMT make me a more attractive candidate to break into trading from PC? Thanks.
I'd take a look through these threads, https://www.wallstreetoasis.com/forums/chartered-market-technician
I passed 2 levels of CMT, every single interview I had even with traders nobody knew what it was. I had to explain it and they were not impressed. Do not plan on finishing the designation. Finishing CFA though.
Taking the CMT to boost ER Resume? (Originally Posted: 05/17/2016)
Will be a sophomore in the fall. I could realistically take 2 levels within a year and I believe that exempts me from the 86 or 87. Good idea?
I've personally never met anyone in my department with the CMT. Also, I thought it was the CFA Level 2 that exempted you from the 86; i've never heard of a CMT based exemption, might want to double check that before you take the dive.

As a note, I found out about the CMT from my employer's internal career website and recognized designation list. I also found out that some pretty impressive people have held this designation - "Bollinger Bands" might ring a bell.
Don't do it. Better off thinking about CFA Level 1 in the fall of your senior year.
Don't know of anyone in research with that designation (did sell-side research). I'm sure between now and your junior summer you could swing an ER or PWM internship, which would be a boost.
Yeah, agreed with all of the above. It must be a one in a million type qualification when it comes to equity research - and I don't mean that in a good way. The qualification would be completely useless in terms of getting hired or doing your job.
