Have a Market Research project for a VC firm due Friday and I don't even know where to start

So I recently had an interview with a small VC firm in my city for the position Market Research Analyst Intern. They focus on financing small health and wellness companies. I managed to impress the firm enough to where they gave me the opportunity to do a trial project for them. I am supposed to do a report on the future of vending machines and the general outlook for the industry, including target customer base, solutions for improvement etc. The problem is I have little to no clue how to even write a report like that for I don't have any experience in such work. My question is are there any good formats or at least a sample for me to use in reference to help construct a marketing report and analysis? Also does anyone have any good resources or advice from when they just started out and weren't really sure how to proceed? Thanks in advance!

Approach this as consultant would a market entry case (plenty of info on the web and MBB sites).

What's the size of the market, growth, key players, sectors, etc. Then breakdown the customer base and any untapped potential (focus on YoY growth of a particular customer base). Finally, I'd focus on product offerings and revenue generation (what products are being sold, are there untapped partnerships in the market?)

Given its a VC, look at investment in the industry - check out Crunchbase and see how much money is being invested in the industry and at what stage.

Start the report off with an executive summary and structure the rest as you would a case.

You should be able to find market reports just by googling. Good luck.

If you have no idea where to start read the Case In Point sections on Market Sizing / Market Entry (google for pdf.). Then, try to read/use some reputable sources if you can find them for free (Gartner / Hypatia) who produce reports like this as their bread and butter.

Map out the technological changes as well as the growth changes. What have the key developments been? Where is money flowing to now? I just googled "disruptive vending machine technology" and found out there is a push for friction-less payment and to incorporate CXM (as with all retail markets).

Market is one piece of the broader investment puzzle. At a high level most VC investors will probably want to know the size of the addressable market, how the market has changed, historical and predicted growth rates (and what is driving this) i.e. current trends, and how a particular technology can fit into this picture (here you start to become concerned with competitors, this may be outside your remit).

So, some things that you might want to think about in your format: executive summary; Market Size (domestic, international(?)); historical growth; Trends; predicted growth (detail assumptions); technological adoption; room for disruption / application of new technologies.
