Are Headhunters useful for undergrads
Is there any point of signing up with the headhunters if you want to get a job in investment banking or close to investment banking? Also, if you are undergrad in senior year do they help at all or are they only good for people out of school. Some good thoughts will be appreciated. Thanks.
no, a lot of them will try to get u temp/consultant gigs
No...
Waste of money
Don't close any doors, that is, who knows if a head hunter might be able to help you, but the whole point of a company using headhunters is because its difficult to find the people that headhunters can bring them. If all a headhunter did was funnel their clients 1000's of resumes from eager undergrads and career switchers, what value would they be adding? None. The company probably gets those resumes anyway. Companies hire HHs because they are looking for a specific candidate to fill a specific role. Or looking for a specific level of experience. Or looking to tap into a employee pool that would otherwise be difficult or time consuming to access.
Also, think about it from the HH's perspective. Headhunters work with companies, not job-seekers. The company is their client, not you. When a client calls up a HH with an assignment to go out an grab an experienced candidate, that's what they're looking for. When they look at your resume and it doesn't exactly fit the specification they are after, it goes in the garbage. No maybe they're a nice guy, maybe there's a cultural fit, none of that. Garbage.
Think of it this way, if your mom told you to walk down to the supermarket and pick up a kiwi, would you be distracted by the mounds of apples and oranges and pears? Or would you find the kiwis, get one that looked good and bring it home? Does it even matter that some of the apples looked pretty juicy? Aside from keeping that in mind for next time in case you get sent for an apple, not in the slightest. This is exactly how it works. HHs are the ones puching the grocery cart around and you, buddy, are the fruit.
Headhunter for undergrad seeking IB? (Originally Posted: 12/07/2015)
I'm a senior at a semi target (3.3 GPA which is low but I've been working throughout college) and have interned at middle market firms in equity research and sales and trading. I've excelled in both of my internships (given offers) though I now want to pursue IBD. It's now December and I haven't received any offers through on-campus recruiting. Should I approach a headhunter? If so, do you have any recommendations for headhunters to contact? My preference would be to work in NYC but I'm flexible.
Your thoughts would be appreciated as I'm sure there are many others in my same situation.
I won't suggest headhunters at this stage. Since you have internships, try and network your way in
I dont know IB, but most headhunter won't work with college students. It's not worth it for them because there's already a channel for you guys to get employed (career services).
Even if you find one that would help it probably means that they're not busy enough with experienced professionals (which pay more $) and might not be the best resource out there.
Additionally, I'm not even sure if most banks would pay a headhunter fee for an entry level position.
All this is just a way to tell you that I think you're likely barking up the wrong tree with a headhunter. I'd focus your efforts elsewhere.
This is insightful, thank you.

Hi to all,
Basically, wanted to know how can headhunters help undergrad students graduating in 2011. I have a feeling that headhunters are more helpful for people who are out of school, but can they help those who are still in school?
Thanks for your thoughts!
Absolutely do not use a headhunter it's a huge waste of money. Anything they do you can do yourself.
Approached by Headhunters as Undergrad? (Originally Posted: 01/15/2014)
I recently received a call from a headhunter--I'm a senior with prop trading and some buy side investment management experience. I have a meeting scheduled for Friday, any idea what I should expect? Any idea what they can do for me?
Only time I've heard this happening is guys who interned at top banking groups getting headhunted for PE FT opportunities.
Headhunter out of Undergrad....Good Idea? (Originally Posted: 11/27/2014)
Hey everyone,
Just wanted to hear some insight from people who may have had experience with this. Currently I am in my senior year of college, with only one job offer so far. Getting a little paranoid, although I have been accepted into MSF programs, somewhat as a backup. Just wondering: is looking for a head hunter straight out of undergrad a good idea? Not sure if this would be more detrimental than benficial or not. Any insight on this would be greatly appreciated.
I don't imagine they usually work with college students, but others will know more. I imagine that if you can't get into a grad program/analyst program somewhere, they can't get you in either....
I have a couple HH's that I know well and refer students to. They usually have a range of job placements, including those with little experience. The issue is they are generally placing into F500 or accounting roles. I think it is a good idea to build the relationships early, but don't expect optimal roles from them.
Can I PM you with details? I have a fairly strong CV, and I've been accepted into MSF programs at top 50 schools already, but I would much rather start immediately rather than waste tuition on school that I wouldn't necessarily need.
Applying through recruiters after graduation? (Originally Posted: 06/21/2010)
The Job market sucks right now and coming from a CUNY (BARUCH) doesn't help much either. I just graduated last month and haven't really began able to get any interviews. I was wondering if anyone else on here is or was in my predicament and what you did that worked in helping you secure a job. I also shot myself in the foot by not really applying through recruiters back in september. I was too busy studying for the CFA at the time and kind of shrugged it off, figuring that recruiters wouldn't recruit heavily from a CUNY anyway. This turned out to be a big mistake since several people I know with lower GPA's than myself received Job ofers this way. Is it possible to still apply to Banks this coming september, even though I am already out of school?
Call Smith Hanley if you want to work in NY - look forward not backward, apply for internships also in the meantime.
Use Headhunter for Jobsearch out of Undergraduate (Originally Posted: 10/21/2013)
Hi,
I am graduating next year from lesser known (but good) school and would like to start working at major buy-side firms. (Either PE or VC would fit my profile, HF less so, but still interested, as I love to learn new things)
I have done 5 internships (2xConsulting, 1xPE, 1xVC, 1xBB IBD) and have 4.5 years of hardly relevant part-time work experience (founded own company and did office job).
Do you think I have a shot with the best firms in the respective industries? Does it make sense to work with headhunter firms out of undergrad? Should I just sent my CV to Associates/VPs at the respective firms, (even if they don't usually hire undergrads)? I am currently based in the US, but I don't have a network here, so everything would be cold. Some advice would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks!
I think it would make sense, if a headhunter is willing to work with you. It sounds like you have a solid resume but the guy with FT experience is still an easier sell. If you got all those internships out of a non-target, it sounds like your more than capable of taking the cold call/email route.
Using a Headhunter out of undergrad (Originally Posted: 01/28/2013)
So I will be attending a school for undergrad that is either a semi-target or non-target (top 40 in Bloomberg). I chose this school for the location, the campus, and it just felt right; however, I have reservations of whether or not it can get me to MBB or BB or top MM. Will headhunters agree to place a kid out of undergrad for the usual fee (25% of first year) even if they are not hired by any firms to recruit that school?
Very doubtful
they can not do it for free.. so prob not worth the time
I would be willing to pay the fee (25% of my first year).
Also, how bad would you say my chances are of even getting an interview at MBB from a top 40 undergrad b-school?
not a chance
What about second tiers? Booz, A.T. Kearney?
Get a good GPA (3.7+), network, and get some relevant internships during undergrad.
My experience is that head hunters are just slighly better than HR reps at acompany. They aren't 'going to bat for you' they really don't care if they place you or one of a hundred other resumes they get. For the most part, they'll do a preliminary screen to see that you fit the specs of the mandates they have, then they pass a stack of resumes to the company. Unless it's higher level search re: executive or for experienced bankers, headhunters are just level one screening agents.
So would doing a linkedin search for alumni at firms and reaching out to them be the best thing to do?
Hold on, you said you are just entering undergrad? Why are you so concerned about something four years from now?? I mean seriously, go to school and enjoy for atleast freshman and sophomore year before you start asking these questions. Its good to see that you have drive, but at the same time you don't want to be the kid who only eats, sleeps, and breaths banking.
nobody uses headhunters for entry level recruiting man. nobody.
