HEC, LBS, LSE
Could somebody please asses my chances in each of these schools?
Undergraduate in finance from a small private school, as non-target as a school can possibly be. I graduated with a 4.0 in 3 years for whatever that is worth
GMAT: 710. I still have some time so and I believe that I could improve my English score a little.
Experience: I worked 1 year as a credit analyst in a small bank. I did a couple of internships during college, published 2 papers and had decent extracurriculars.
Do I have any chance to get in Tier I programs as the ones mentioned above or should I aim for something more realistic?
Dont really know about LBS but LSE has a lot of masters programs they offer, their admission criteria differs and what you choose is a major factor in whether you get in or not. Like msc accounting and finance has the reputation of accepting students which didnt get in more competitive programs like finance or economics. Some of the programs there also require you to take calculus and linear algebra for atleast a year so make sure you have that (you havent specified the program you wanna apply)
That being said, your stats are okay, you should be able to get in a top program with a good statement of purpose.
just try to be safe and choose a less competitive program at lse as your second/third choice. Msc Finance is very competitive there. Applying to a program never hurt anyone. Take the GMAT/Gre as many times as you can. Your score is descent, but still.
Thank you for the input. I was actually talking about their Msc. in Finance which I know is very competitive. What would be a good second choice at LSE if my goal is IB?
Msc Finance Msc Finance and PE (depsite the name of PE :D) Msc Finance and Eco Msc Finance and Acco.
abhiminhas I'd be careful about positing potentially misleading information here. For example, many applicants who get into MSc A+F at LSE have put it as their first choice, it is not a back-up to finance.
Yes you have a realistic chance with that GMAT. I'd add Bocconi to your list, as they'll give you a full merit scholarship judging from your gmat.
I was considering their MSF as well but they aren't very specific with their placement statistics. That was the main reason why I felt skeptic about it. What I liked the most about them is that I could intern somewhere to increase my chances of landing an IB job. I will probably apply
Bocconi placement for ibd is probably the best up there with LSE and HEC. There was an article quantifying this some time ago, try google
Be careful with placement statistics. Because it only tells your half story. It doenst mention whether you have secured your place because of your undergraduate or master. For example,
I declined LBS because in their placement report of 2015 they wrote c. 10x to McK and 10x to GS. I asked the recruitment about this and she told me that nobody in 2015 from the LBS secured a place there. confused, i asked again and she told me: these people have been offered their places at McK and GS BEFORE their Msc degree.
therefore, the best placement tool is Linkedin. At Bocconi's is very very good.
One of my friends got accepted in LSE with a 700 and 6 months internship as Fund selector in an AM company.
I would feel very confident in your chances if you can get your GMAT to 740+, granted you write a decent motivation/cover letter. The deal with placement in London is that it will be hard as a non-UK citizen if you do not already have connections. That's one of the pros of 2-year programmes: you get to do an internship in the middle. In Europe ex-UK you'll find that the schools you're looking at are targets and will put you in a competitive position.
Do you mind giving some additional info on your background/placement preferences? Otherwise, feel free to PM to talk about it.
Applied to all three MSc myself and I am now in one of these. You will have a very good chance to get to interviewss (HEC, LBS). HEC & LBS appreciate internship experience more than LSE. LSE is more a research university than a B-school, therefore, academic and GMAT are playing an important role.
You should spent your time to write an super motivation letter rather increasing your score at just some pp.
The decision about LSE/LBS and HEC must be asked where do you see yourself working? UK: then choice must be between L's. Continental Europe? HEC might be a decent choice esp. as the tuition fees are cheaper.
Bocconi does have a superb placement in London.
tbo1789 in all honesty I would rather work in London but I would be fine if I can get into IB wherever in Europe
Same for me. London was my target but is getting much harder due to the Brexit uncertainty. Frankfurt and Paris did not increase their demand but I hope they will do so next year :/
