Hello everyone - Junior at Baruch

Hello all,

Name is Mike and I'm a junior at Baruch College. I was an accounting major but have finally switched my major to Finance because I knew that's what I wanted more.

I joined here to see if I can join a few discussions and hope learn more about Finance.

One major problem I have is my GPA and where I want to go in the finance field.

Unfortunately I'm sporting a 3.0 GPA and I have a part-time (20hours a week) job at an accounting firm. I am also involved with the Finance and Economics Society and the School of Business Case Studies.

I'm worried because I want to aim to get an internship, but the problem is.... it would be awfully hard for me to quit my job. I might be able to tell them I have to split the workload in the summer, but I just have no idea what internship will be available and if they (internship and my job) can accommodate my schedule.

My biggest concern is my GPA though.

Hi Mike...just consider it a hazing ritual. You could probably learn a lot here.

Thanks a lot, but still worried about my GPA, even worse than I was before

Well, you may not end up with your dream job, but you can end up with something decent if you play your cards right. Do a search on networking.

I know the cliche, "reach for the stars" may seem fitting here, but I knew I was never a 3.8 GPA student.

With so much stuff going on in my life and trying to find time without killing myself, it's been tough.

I really need to network but I guess I'm afraid of getting out there and talking with the big heads

The only way you are screwed is if you don't make the gpa cutoff. There may be some instances where, through networking, it's possible to bypass ocr and/or human resources so you don't have to worry about it but in most cases, especially at larger firms, it's going to be tough. Assuming this is the case, this will eliminate most of the larger and well known banks and consulting firms (especially considering that your school isn't a target to begin with). However, don't assume that just because you can't work at Goldman doesn't mean you can't work in banking, consulting, etc. If I was you, I would target boutique banks, consulting firms, and other similar types of companies using a combination of cold calls and alumni connections. A 3.0 isn't the end of the world, if you can get interviews (networking is by far your best shot) the worst that can happen is they ask about it.

One final thought: think about how much of your resume is dedicated to your GPA. It's literally one line (maybe two or three if you count type of degree and major). If you let the gpa affect your confidence, that will be a MUCH bigger obstacle than the gpa itself.
