Hello from India

Chimp from India says Hello.
Prospective applicant for MSF and other finance courses in the US. I am a Computer Science Engineer who came through the engineering course rather unconvincingly. Worked at a run of the mill IT firm in India for 10 months. Took a liking for the financial markets world during engineering itself and tried to change my career towards that goal of being a trader. Got into a post graduate diploma in Financial Markets,a one year program in India which was offered by the national stock exchange of India(NSE). Performed well and got an internship with a broker and was trained on their prop desk, mostly equity and currency derivative strategies.Traded pretty well.Couldnt continue due to some unavoidable reasons. Was self employed for a period after that, advising people about the markets and sharing views and clearing their doubts and apprehensions.
Decent extracurricular activities. Pool, snooker, billiards state level player. Worked with a non profit and was instrumental in starting a community radio station.
Looking forward to a MSF degree coming fall. Really interested to enhance my core finance knowledge and maybe, land a trading job or something along those lines.
Engineering which I completed in 2011 and managed a GPA around 3. and problem was didnt attend math classes well so not so good grades in math. And a downward trending grades, attributed to change in interest and self learning the markets.
Post graduate diploma was not a high scoring course and managed 74% with the topper having 81%.
Appearing for the GRE in 2 weeks and been notching practice scores in the range of 300-328. Hoping for a good show in the final one and to be in a acclaimed program next September.

Looking forward to a great time on the forum and looking forward to meet new friends and maybe colleagues.

salam alekum miya. hindustan mein kidhar se ? nawabs, charminar, aur biriyani ka zameen se yahaa.

Your GRE score is super good job. Where are you thinking about applying to in USA ? I find it pretty impressive that you are veering towards your passion of finance despite having an engineering background. Very few from the engineering/medicine horde realize there are serious careers to be made outside of the aforementioned fields. As my friend in the old country used to say, "in India most people become an engineer first and then figure out what they want to really do with their life/career". I remember when i was growing up in bharat....with all those god damn preparation classes, tuitions, advertisements on buses to tv channels to the largest front page newspaper advertisements (showcasing a coaching academy's toppers w/ the contact details of their coaching academies) you'd ever see in your life - it seemed like the only two career paths in life were engineering and medicine, and if you had the slightest inclination towards business and finance you'd join some CA academy (as if accounting was the only thing worth doing in the finance field). And up till 10th to be honest I was doing pretty well in the sciences I thought I'd actually become an engineer due to my interest in automobiles. But then I realized I had a passion for the markets, business, and finance and I didn't go down that road. I learned early on that passion > hobby. I loved mechanical engineering, cars, F1, etc. But I realized I also wanted to make a lot of money in my life, and nothing is as intellectually stimulating as the markets are (for me). So I didn't go down that road.

Good to have you onboard, I'm new here too.

Am from Orissa but lived in Delhi mostly. You put it out perfectly about the system in India. Its a mighty task to break out of the system and start doing something which one actually wants to do. Anyways,am trying to do what I would prefer doing all my life, trading and tracking global markets,Been trading since quite some time now.But the stint with the prop desk opened up my mind further and I realized what I was missing while trading on the personal account. Now there are only numbers around me and scrips and charts! :). Hope to get something good along the path in the future. So what do you do now and where do you currently live? I am looking for MSF programs next fall. Have started compiling my list of target schools. Half of my extended family is in the US,consulting them about the programs too. So will be done by the weekend.

I'm currently doing my M.Sc in Econ at a good (not great) U.S. University and I'm currently studying for the CFA whenever time allows. BTW you said you got some certification from the NSE ? What did it teach you ? I didn't know exchanges offer programs. I have a portfolio of holdings in Indian stocks and I'm always looking to enhance my knowledge about the capital market system there. What are you interested in ? Equities, commodities, FX, FI ?

ok. So you intend to apply for jobs next year? and you too must be looking at trading roles I guess. Well the certifications that NSE provides were part of the curriculum at the institute. We were taught at NIFM,Faridabad. Its a Ministry of Finance institution. So,what are your top holdings in the portfolio? And the market system is good. Retail participation is picking up.Domestic players and the foreign portfolio investors are the two big parties in the market. Derivatives segment is pretty good. and flourishing. I work mostly equity and equity derivatives and sometimes currency options. Option strategies. Arbitrage. Pair trades. Lots of things. Anything which is making money. :P
