HF Analyst role. Front to Back office all together?
What do you guys think of working (pre-MBA) at a small specially created team at a hedge fund where your role involves ALL from front to back office (because the team is so small)?
Is this a good opportunity where you get to learn all aspects of the business? Or will this position looked down upon from interviewers at future companies or MBAs because of the involvement in the back office?
I would be open to something like that depending on how good the fund is. I'm no expert on admissions, but I doubt that anyone will discount your experience because you had to do back office work on top of functioning as an ordinary hf analyst. In fact, I'd imagine that knowing a thing or two about back office functions like fund accounting would come in handy if you decide to start your own fund in the future.
Personally, if I were to interview you, I would look upon your back office experience as a positive, actually... Assuming, of course, that you learned more about how things actually work.
Thanks for your great feedback guys!
don't think you're required to detail every little thing you did unless you absolutely want to
Granted its less than ideal I'd try to find out the breakdown of how your time will be spent. Saw a role myself the other day that was a hybrid like this. Def interesting
Where would you find a role like this? I'm an MBA with back office and some middle office experience from BB banks, looking to get into the HF space.
Thanks
I doubt hf's will have this sort of role; they're still very much segregated.
Look at investment managers, specifically lean trust companies with small departments
Pktkid- have been doing some research on my end, obviously alot of HF don't have career sections to see jobs so alot is relying on recruiters, as well as trying to leverage my network. I'd be happy to get into a HF/PE in a support/Middle office role. Problem is I have spent the last ~7 years at BB investment banks (2 of them) and the recruiters keep pushing me to take similar roles at other banks when I really want to break into the buy side/alt investment space
I do not think all HFs have that kind of position, your best shot is to get in touch with recruiters
These roles do exist, particularly at smaller funds (FO role, the daily tasks could involve fair amount of operational and financial duties, which I certainly viewed as a positive as well. As the fund grows, those BO tasks would get delegated to new hires.
