Holiday Gift Ideas
Thought it might be interesting to start up a thread on good holiday gift ideas for friends, family members and coworkers. Idea is to find solid gifts that most people might not think of, so let's keep the iPad and scotch recommendations to a minimum.
For simplicity, let's target a $100-500 price range, although awesome ideas outside of it are also welcome.
Disclaimer: I'm in UG with a student's budget.
I'm buying my girlfriend's parents a tour of the Radio City Music Hall/Rockettes- you get to meet a Rockette and everything. They love christmas in NY, and her dad loves that kind of stuff.
Price: $19.95 per ticket.
I think it's a great (and unique) gift idea that certain people would love at a great price.
I usually tend to just check out this website: http://uncrate.com/
Most of its pretty cool stuff.
A unique gift would be a kit from 23 and me: https://www.23andme.com/
I haven't tried it, but at $99 a pop seems like a super cool gift.
Uncrate is typically expensive items though. Another similar, great site is http://coolmaterial.com/
Also, great idea on that 23 and me, very unique and kind of want to buy myself one.
Going super cheap for co-workers, clever coffee mugs.
Just spent 20min browsing Uncrate...awesome stuff!
uncrate alone was worth starting this thread. Really like the insulated miir growler for a beer lover - great for beach vacations. Also, on their website "patent pending: because nobody patents mediocrity" should appeal to the WSO audience.
Until there is clear privacy protection around genetic test results I'm not getting one (and I have a healthy immediate family).
Co-workers are actually pretty easy I feel for secret santa type stuff, simply because expectations are low and someone like me (who starts threads on this stuff in October) will handily exceed them.

Do you plan on getting your seniors holiday gifts? I just started out in this firm here not long ago and there are these two seniors who have been extremely helpful to me in the process. one got me hired, and the other is nice throughout the entire process...
one male, one female and my budget is around $300 for each. Not too sure whether a tie for the male and scarf for the female would be a good idea.
I've heard only females buy ties for males, is that true? in that case, would buying my male boss a tie be awkward?
Also for the female, need you advice as to whether buying her her some imported biscottis (ie. from scotland, italy, etc), chocolates, cookies of some sort worth well over 2 bills is a good idea... or just a no name scarf from around $300+? Not even sure whether you can buy a good brand name scarf apart from the ever so popular burberry one for less than $300. Suggestions?
anyways, advice is appreciated and your thoughts, or your intentions in what you're giving to your seniors (if you're even planning on buying them on that is)
If someone got you hired and you have a prior relationship (i.e. family friend), get them whatever you would have gotten them last year had you had the money. I would not get your boss a tie though. I think gifts given around shared interests or for the home/kids are more acceptable. I don't know what you could get a female boss. Its a line between being warm and weird.
Wine for everyone!
Find out what they like and buy something which caters to their interests.
For example: those who know me understand that I like my gifts in the form of Johnnie Walker, cartons of cigarettes and symphony tickets.
