Holiday vs. New Job (dilemma)
I have an offer from an IBD bank. I will be starting in October. Before the offer, I had already purchased a ticket for Asia (1week holiday) as there is a wedding I need to attend. - for the start of January 2016.
As it is the start of my job, I am in a dilemma as how I should word it or when I should tell the firm. Should I tell it after I sign the contract, or the week I join? or should I leave it to after? What would be the best approach?
Let me know your thoughts.
You should bring it up now. Like immediately. Usually you let them know when in the negotiation process, but assuming this is an analyst position there probably wasn't any negotiation just, you're hired, here's what we'll pay take it or leave it.
I would do it before you sign the contract.
Talk to them about it. Not telling them right away will only make it worse down the road. Explain what is going on and go from there.
If I say it before signing, would it change the perception in any way? It is 3-4months away. In a professional environment it should be ok, but in the IBD world, holiday is much more difficult.
bump
Just mention it to them and say you would love to attend but if that's not possible you understand as work is your priority
If this helps, I'll tell you the story of a friend. He got offered a position to a job, but was getting married and going on a honey moon and would be gone for about a month, like a month after his start date. Before signing the offer he brought it up to them and said that he had that planned, and they said it was ok. So he was able to take all that time off, a month after he started, with no issues.
I agree with the above and would say tell about it now. It is enough of a notice period. And I would bring it up again around 3 weeks prior to the date of departure, just to give a heads-up.
Just out of curiosity, is the wedding for family that lives in Asia? Or is this some crazy destination wedding?
Your best bet is to let the firm or direct report know right away... at least he/she will be prepared when that time comes. Also, any work you get will not conflict with the time you're away. Best of all, telling them puts you at ease since you already got the offer!
I've encountered this. Wasn't planning on switching jobs, so had already booked, paid for a 1.5 week trip somewhere. Things happened, and I decided to move to a different company. After I had gotten the offer and signed, (literally a few hours later, went to lunch after signing), told them the situation - look, I wouldn't normally do this at a new job, but I already had booked/paid for a vacation 4 months ago, apologize for the inconvenience etc... Granted the vacation was still 6 months away, but still. Give a heads up as soon as you can and it will be fine.
Always alert to prior commitments - most will be fine with it. Can always say you will not attend if it means not being able to keep the job as well
I recommend telling them as you board the flight, that way they can't try to stop you. There's a Napoleon quote, "it's better to ask forgiveness than permission."
Best thing I have read in a while!!
Thanks, SB's accepted but not expected.
