Landing Investment Banking Internship From A Sophomore's Perspective (Hong Kong)
Hello everyone here, I am doing an International Business and Global Management degree in HKU and am passionate about investment banking. Last summer I had the chance to intern at a boutique investment bank and also worked in UBS Private Banking as an intern. The experiences are good and I understand more and I am more sure that I want to go for IBD (M&A>TMT>others). Apparently BB does not hire a sophomore as they can't turn it to a return hire.
So my main focus is going to be landing an internship offer at a boutique / mid-market IBD and at the same time learning more about valuations. Any suggestions around this for a second year student? Thanks a lot
Finding an IB internship in Hong Kong for now (Originally Posted: 06/01/2016)
I'm a recent graduate of a UK target school. I'll be doing a master in the UK soon. Is it possible for me to find an internship in a boutique bank in Hong Kong this time around? I want to work as an intern now, not summer. What banks would you guys recommend me to contact? Should I contact the recruitment department or individual bankers? Any advice would be greatly appreciated!
dude... we're in June. HK internship recruiting literally wraps up early Jan.
But they are relatively formal right? How about the informal ones? Do they also want interns to work with them this time around?

HK IBD Intern Recruiting Schedule? (Originally Posted: 12/16/2011)
Hey All,
So last year, as far as I'm aware, most first-round phone interviews for BB banks in Hong Kong happened early January (with in-person interviews happening in mid or late January).
This year I understand that many of the banks moved their recruiting cycle earlier. I've heard word that first round is already over for MS and JPM (for IBD in HK) - can anyone confirm that's correct? What other banks are finished first round?
Have all the banks moved to this new schedule? Are any banks still expected to do their first rounds in January? Last year I didn't hear from any banks until early Jan. As of now I've heard from one bank. Are there other banks left that haven't started their first round yet?
Thanks very much in advance for anyone's insight. I though I was pretty knowledgeable with how Asia recruiting went but the changes this year threw me for a curve.
Cheers
SBs for all helpful responses!
At least for me, MS first round IBD is finished, JPM scheduled interview next week, and GS and Citi first rounds were all this week. Hope that helps!
spot for RBS IBD in HK has been filled.
chinese new year starts on 1/23 in 2012, so its understandable that they'd want to finish most of the recruiting before that.

Does any have any experiences or knowledge about a HK IB internship?
The big banks recruit at the usual US colleges and hold separate interviews and info sessions from the US offices. I think they all recruit for internships about one month ahead of the US recruiting schedule. Expect to see big recruiting events (often by invitation) at hotels in major cities.
The two big international BB players in Hong Kong are Goldman and UBS. Business is really picking up in the region.
Equity's what you want to go into.
what about FI? how is fixed income in asia?
How high is the bar for HK IBD or Singapore IBD SA position? (Originally Posted: 12/17/2010)
Hello,
I am very interested in doing IBD at Hong Kong or Singapore. My question is in general how high the bar is for Asia IBD? How competitive is it to land a summer SA position as a junior?
To give you a little background, I am a finance & accounting double major sophomore at a target (top 25). My GPA is 3.6 and I have some decent work experience.
My Asian family is quite modest but I will do everything I can to land a good banking job. Pay is not too big of a concern for me. I really want to break in the industry first.
Any inputs are appreciated. Good luck to all applicants!
Do you speak FLUENT mandarin or cantonese? More relevant for HKD IBD.
FILTH (fail in london try hongkong) doesnt really apply anymore these days.

I'm studying abroad during the fall semester in Shanghai, is there anyway I can still interview at BB HK IBD's? I'm at a target, and as I understand, HK recruiting starts fall semester.
The short answer will definitely be YES, but again it all comes down to why they should hire u, like can u speak Chinese and ect ect...
they do not start interviewing till january though
Sorry, wrong word choice. I meant to write apply, not interview.
i guess it does not really matter where you submit the application lol, if you can stay in that region when they start interviewing, that would be a plus
IB internship/volunteer opportunities in HK? (Originally Posted: 04/02/2013)
Hi guys,
I'm currently studying abroad in hk and looking for local IB or HF opportunities. Could anyone recommend some boutiques or forums like WSO? School career website does not offer online job database and I barely know any local firms.
Thank you in advance!
If you are in HKU or HKUST, ask around. Their job postings are usually for their full-time students exclusively but kids there should know a lot about local banking.
