Spring Internship - Worth It?
I might have an opportunity to do an internship with some smaller banks in the spring. But before I chase after this opportunity, I just want to know if it is worth it to do this? I am a 3rd year already so my resume would already be submitted to major ibanks before I even start this internship. Also, I don't want to make up my mind once I "get the offer" because this will be an informal internship and I don't want to turn down guys who helped me in the process.
Not taking it would be incredibly short-sided.
What if you don't get anything this summer? What if you need to recruit again for FT next fall? What if you pick up skills at your spring internship that directly lead to your converting a summer position into an FT offer?
Just apply for it. Times are so bad nowadays that you're lucky if you can secure a decent internship. If you get multiple offers, that's great news and I'm sure that your pals who helped you secure the 'informal internship' will understand since most people apply for multiple internship positions across the board. The key thing is how you relay the message to the bank which offered you the 'informal internship' - you just need to make sure you do not burn any bridges, and explain to them properly with a sincere and apologetic tone. Also, if you get an offer elsewhere, do inform the other banks ASAP so that they can make alternative arrangements. Hope it helps!
Spring Internship At A Bank (Originally Posted: 12/25/2011)
Hey guys, and happy holidays!
I am a sophomore and I have been offered an internship for the spring semester at a local MM bank. It isn't well known as a bank, and has about 18 people only in the office. While the deals will be small and locally based, it could give me good experience given my age.
It is 15 hrs/week, and on top of classes, that makes it a tough semester. I need to keep my grades up, but is this too much to ask? Thanks!
Absolutely do it. An internship at an MM/boutique bank, even unpaid, is perfect for getting you into a Bulge Bracket Summer Analyst program if that's what you want later on. Even better that you have this opportunity this Spring as you can use it to line up something good for the summer. I did an unpaid internship at a hedge fund during a semester and it was a way better use of my time in terms of getting into a Bulge Bracket program than extra time studying for classes would have been.
Same here! Did you take fewer classes though?
Spring Internship - Boutique merchant bank (Originally Posted: 05/01/2011)
I am currently doing a spring semester internship with a boutique merchant bank. The bank specializes in an industry I am very interested in, and I thought that this would be a great way to get exposed to it prior to junior year. However, so far all I have done is tedious excel work. Not even to the extent that I crunch any numbers–just creating databases of companies for the bank to potentially do business for. While the work is tedious, it is not affecting my school work in any way, and I am just curious how something like this will look on my resume. Is it worth it?
Thanks.
The experience is priceless. And if you are interested in that specific industry, you gain exposure plus networking opportunities. That spring internship will open doors in the future for other investment banking opportunities. Find a good summer internship for this summer and you'll be fine. Good Luck.
Definitely agree. Great networking opportunity for future internships and Jobs. Especially since you're only a sophomore, having an internship with a reputable firm will definitely be an asset when you're going for other internships this Summer and next.
How are Fall/Spring Internships Looked Upon? (Originally Posted: 08/05/2013)
I have decided to pursue a 3 month spring internship in the IBD at a local boutique during sophomore year.
First off, is it possible to receive such an internship 1.5 years into college?
How do BBs regard spring internships in lieu of summer internships? For my sophomore summer, I'm planning on studying and or doing an internship abroad. This is why I'm gunning for spring experience. Should I disregard the study abroad experience (it's okay if I don't study abroad) for a summer IBD program, or do both?
Can this spring (or summer) IBD internship be somehow leveraged into an S&T FO junior summer stint? Or will it be useless?
Currently a rising junior at semi-target (top 10 b school, non-Ivy). Honestly, taking an internship during the year (sophomore year) was one of the better networking decisions I've made. Alums were much more receptive to me because I actually knew what I was talking about compared to other members of my graduating class.
Just my two cents, if it's good experience, I'd say go for it. Fingers crossed that it pays off in a few months.
You can leverage your experience into an S&T internship with networking. The work experience will be good for you and it will help you get something in the future. I think BBs care about the experience you got and not when you get it.
Was that internship in soph. year a BO, MO, or IBD at a top firm or an internship at a local unknown boutique?
Kinghongkong, you make a good point about when someone gets an internship vs what was learned.
Any others know something about this?
