How Best to Utilize My Summer?

Hello all,

Before reading I just wanted to thank you for your input and/or insight! The reason I post here is because this is my end goal as a career and anything that I can do to prepare, the better - especially now that I have time! I've heard top students (e.g. Harvard, MIT, etc.) do a surprising amount of preparing for this industry (if they're interested), and contextually I'm not enrolled in one of those top universities. With some b/g info, I have ~5 semesters left of undergrad and I haven't had an internship pertinent to this industry, yet.

I have about 2 months "free" of time where I'm not in classes, from now until the 18th of July. I was debating what I should do with the time, I've taken a day trip and have planned two other quick vacations just to gain some sanity back, but I feel like I'm wasting my time "relaxing". I have a part-time job that isn't relatively challenging, so as a result, the remaining 100 hours or so per week I have "free" I find it hard to do something not productive (read: playing games, hanging out with friends that aren't esp. motivated or watching YouTube). I usually try to read a book every 2-4 weeks, so I'm not necessarily wasting the summer away being lazy, but I feel stagnant just sitting here, not learning the most I can or progressing towards this goal. Among other things, I can gather a couple of options:

  • Study for GMAT
  • Study Cases (Where could I find some?)
  • Add some books to my reading list that would supplement my learning (Recommendations?)
  • Get a head start on some esp. technical classes I'm taking next semester

Thanks so much, again!

Try starting a little business or something that can give you "in the field" experience. I used to read books but it was useless if I didn't apply some of the stuff I learnt. With the business, don't worry about making money. Instead you should keep a diary of all the problems you are going through and try to note down how you solved them.

Absolute truths don't exist... celebrated opinions do.

Go have some fun? You're not likely to have two full prime summer months open very often (if at all). You should have plenty of time to both have a little fun and do a bit of preparation/studying/reading.
