How do first round interviews work?

If a firm is recruiting, but not on campus, how does the first round interviews work? By phone, or do you have to pay your expenses to NY?
At both BBs and boutiques, as well as consulting firms if you know, please. I'm at a Target and although firms say they are recruiting, it doesn't seem like a lot of companies are coming on campus. Maybe to save money.

Off campus first round interviews are usually done by phone, unless you are already in NY (their location), then you could be brought in as it would be convenient. Regarding format, it depends on the bank and its recruiting effort. Usually there will either be 1 round then a final, or 2 rounds then the final. With the 2 round then final system, 1st round is either a fit based focus or technical based focus interview, with the 2nd interview having the other focus. With a first round then final interview schedule, the first first round will combine both fit and technical questions to get a general feel for your personality and candidacy - the final round will be a much more exhaustive, in person, interview either way and will test both fit and technical.
