How do I move my offer from Chicago to New York? Freaking out!
Hello all,
I was lucky enough to receive a full time offer to a consulting firm but the office location was for my second preference being Chicago. However, I would really love to be in New York, is there any way to negotiate a change of location when accepting the offer?
I have a returning offer from the company that I interned in and that offer is for New York City. In addition, my family is relocating back to the East Coast from Chicago. Is there anyway that I can use that for leverage? EG: I will accept the second offer on the grounds that the office location is New York City rather than Chicago.
Please please let me know!
Think about this very wisely before you do this.
Yes, NYC is amazing and awesome and perfect for your career, but if the consulting firm in Chicago is much better in terms of prestige and name brand, don't discount that due to location.
You can bring up the fact that you would prefer to go to the NYC office. If you're okay with going with the second offer, than its not a problem just email and ask. Make sure to give the reason for family as your predominant reason, and it would align better with your goals and preferences.
If they say: sorry, we can't. Then go with the second offer. Pretty easy.
Like UTDFinanceGuy said, be careful about blowing a good career opportunity so you can live closer to family for a couple of years. I know a couple of years seem like a long time when you're 22 but it goes by like nothing and you'll look back and it won't even register.
If the firms and position are equal, go for it but don't blow something good because you'll be a two hour flight away for a couple of years. I'm not in consulting but I have a decent amount of friends who are/were and from what they've said it's relatively easy to move offices if you give it a shot and you'll most likely be traveling 4 days a week anyway. And that means you'll have plenty of miles to go back and forth on your own for weekends.
I will only echo what others have said. I'm not sure if the other offer would give you any leverage unless the location difference actually made it a hard decision for you (from your tone, it seems like you want to work for the NYC office of the Chicago firm). If the two firms are not direct competitors or of the same tier of "prestige," I honestly don't think it'd mean anything.
I don't know how your final rounds went, but usually the partners specific to your final round interview location accept you into their office. The wording of your offer letter should communicate this clearly. I think it is counterproductive to request a location that has already been denied to you. The firm has reasons for not wanting you in New York. Even if they allowed you to do this, I would think you would need another final round at the New York location.
Having said that, considering the massive delta in living cost between Chicago and NYC, it will probably be cheaper in the long run to visit NYC on select weekends than to have a place there, unless of course, you were planning to split rent with your folks.
Again, I don't know where you got the job, but if it's MBB, I'd shut up, take it, and run.
