How does one go from asset management to hedge fund?
I work in wealth management currently and am curious about how to make a career change to hedge funds.

Tiger Global has an incredible janitorial program. In many HFs that have subsidized kitchen, they may be looking for additional chefs.
Okay, stupid comment aside. You need to shed more light on what you're currently doing and where you want to be.

That kind of transition will likely be the hardest thing you've ever accomplished. I will briefly post a few avenues but most will probably be herculean tasks (I'm assuming you are low level WM front office, but not broker)
Pursue more and more portfolio management related roles until you are managing some group of broker's portfolios -> AM shop as analyst/PM -> HF timeframe = years. a. study CFA to add a multiplier for probability of this working out.
Pursue sales desks type of roles -> try to be an internal for AI desk -> transition to sales role at HF/HFoF
Grind out a few years ->MBA -> IB Associate -> HF
Keep lateraling roles at your bank until you are directly involved w/ capital markets/research. Do your time and get scooped up/network your way into HF.
The level of dedication required to pursue any of these and win is huge, and you should be prepared to suffer for some time as you put a plan in motion and execute.

I would just start researching stocks as much as possible, getting my "10,000 hours" of research in. This is really difficult to do while paying the bills doing something else. The MBA suggestion may allow you to dedicate more time. Seekingalpha, motley fool and some smaller blogs will pay you to write articles.
