How easy to move from PE to VC?
Posting here as I need some advice fairly quickly as I have to make a decision in the morning, regarding whether or not to go for an interview.
So am currently interviewing for PE roles, but my ultimate goal is to hopefully move into VC down the line. Ofc Tech PE would be most ideal for that, but pure tech PE roles are scarce so likelihood is I will end up doing PE in some other industry.
Just wondering after 2/3yrs as an Associate in PE how easy would a move to VC be? If it helps assume I would be willing to go down a notch or two in seniority if necessary (e.g. from an Associate 2 at my PE shop to a Associate 1 at the VC shop).
It will be hard if you aren't focused on tech in the PE role. You really need to have your ear to the ground to get a VC job at the moment, and I'm not sure that a generalist PE position would allow you to do that.
Infra PE to VC? (Originally Posted: 05/18/2015)
So am near end of my first 2 years in IB. Am currently interviewing for PE roles, but because I am in a utilities & infra team headhunters keep recommending me Infra PE roles. Dont think its wise to turn them down, because some are v.good opps at brand name shops, and at very least I could do with the interview experience.
Ultimate goal is to hopefully move into VC after a few years of PE. Obviously tech PE would be the most ideal, but I'm just wondering if doing infra PE will rule out my chance of moving into VC?
Not many headhunters are going to recommend you to a tech PE firm because you simply don't have the background. Plenty of other analysts with much more relevant experience. You will have to network yourself into a job. You need a clear story - after that just start banging on doors. Otherwise, just go the easy route and go to an infrastructure PE firm.
