Seems like a self congratulatory article written so the author could give himself a pat on the back for his parenting job; and to rationalize that it was okay for them to have 12 kids since they raised them properly. Not that it's not okay, but it is weird. Also, since when is having your kids able to pay for college themselves a barometer for anything, especially when you probably used a ton of money to set them up that way? And how many of them went to the 50k/year colleges the people on this site talk about ie the ivy's, top privates, and out of state public schools?
It's also meaningless since they're well off in the first place. If a poor black single mother of 12 did this, i would be in awe. For a rich, white family from Utah to do this, who gives a sh*t. Especially since the method to achieve it was: lots of rules and plan out my children's lives. They had to learn to sew, they had to be a boy scout, they had do community service, and build their own computer (huh?), ugh. They did let their kid pick which sport to play, so there was lots of freedom in that regard. It wasn't even really up to the kids that they would eventually be paying for college themselves.
Wonder what it feels like being one of the younger kids... You already know exactly how your life is going to pan out by looking at your older siblings.
Thanks for sharing. What a bunch of horsecrap. If parenting is just a bunch of rules then I don't want to be a parent.
And like the annotations, what I really want to know is how the hell did all these kids pay for college? And how much debt did they graduate with?
Love some of the ideas in there and the earning your reward mentality.
Good ideas but I come from a large family and the underlying denominators for success are 1) parental stability and 2) income. Have 12 or even 5 kids on a shitty salary, no way you're getting 1/2 of this stuff done. Good job of RAISING the kids though instead of just turning them loose and hoping for the best.
