How To Properly Follow Up Application
Hey guys,
About me: from non-target currently unpaid intern at sell side shop. Essentially have been actively cold emailing/ networking for a little over a year with a reply ratio of 23% (over 300 emails) and maybe got about 10% on the phone. In short, saw a position from a buy-side shop that I think I fit in really well with, both position and company wise, and applied through the career site 2 days ago.
I don't know anyone at the Company personally and my cold emails to analysts have gone ignored. I am sure people have posted about following up after applying on here before, although I didn't see any direct posts about it, but basically how do I approach following up? I assume the logical route here is to call HR next week and make sure my resume was received but not sure if there is anything more effective.
And just expanding on that, do you recommend following up a ignored/unanswered cold email? Any tips on that in term of timing, format etc. Obviously, on a think line between being annoying and being persistent.
Thanks for the help

Is it worth calling HR to check on the status of online applications or will this just be seen as an annoyance?

annoyance. i tried it before and only got a reply when you have actually met with the recruiter.
Been there done that. Wish I could get those hours of wasted time back...
I would give them a ring just so you have a name and contact. If you can find out the hiring manager or area that you would be working that would give you a better chance. I would try linkedin, alumni or friends to see if you can get a ballpark idea of who put out the job rec and try and contact that person. If all else fails, going to the HR person can't hurt. Maybe they can tell you who is hiring, etc.
email if you have the contact info
Follow up with any alums/ personal connections you have at the bank. But HR, especially at a BB, won't be able to help much.

Follow up on an emailed application? (Originally Posted: 06/10/2013)
I applied to two summer internship positions for a BB over a week ago and have not heard back since(same firm, different recruiters and positions). I got a hold of their emails because it was posted on my school's job database, and emailed my applications directly to the individuals. I also applied directly through the website for one of those positions.
I want to follow up to make sure my application was received/processed, but I'm not sure of the proper way to go about this. Should I email both of them or call the office even though it is a BB. Keep in mind I have no connection to these people at all, and I did not speak with them or any alumni in the divisions beforehand. I really don't want to come off as desperate either.
Forgot to mention that these are PWM positions if that helps in any way.
seeing as how many SA's have already started, you're most likely not going to hear anything back about this summer. Not trying to be funny, but you're gonna need to send in applications/make connections more than two weeks before the summer begins.
It's for a PWM/AM position and I've heard that they are looking to hire at almost any time and don't follow the strict IBD BB internship recruiting schedule. Both of the positions were posted at the end of May and the deadlines are at the end of June. The descriptions also stated they were for a summer position this year.
Thanks for trying to help either way
Should I send a follow up email to a job application submission? (Originally Posted: 05/10/2013)
I applied to a job posting through an alum in the company (I sent him my app and he sent it to the recruiter). It's been 2 weeks and I haven't heard anything, would it be appropriate to email either the alum or recruiter and ask about the status of the position?
Thanks
email the recruiter and the alum
Following up on an application (Originally Posted: 05/17/2012)
Hi,
I'm interested to know people's views on following up an e-mail application that has gone unanswered.
Is it worth spending the time to make a phone call or chase up the company with a further e-mail? I can't really imagine that anything can come of this if they haven't been moved by your CV and cover letter to get in touch. Or is that too defeatist? ;)
Thoughts?
Thanks.
I applied online for an internship once, then didn't hear back anything for 2 weeks. When I called to check-in, they said that they hadn't received it. They then told me to email my resume + cover letter, and offered me an interview, which led to an offer that I accepted.
Give them at least a week, and then call. Even if they did see your application, but ignored it, calling them will show your drive/initiative and can only help your chances.

Hi guys,
I'd appreciate some advice on my situation: two weeks (Nov 2) ago I applied to a lateral hire position with a reputable IB. A week after that (Nov 9) I called and asked about the status of my application, because I had received nothing since sending in my resume and cover letter. HR rep told me that they were closing the resume collection period that coming Friday (Nov 13), and that I should perhaps hear something either this week or the next.
I'm really interested in the job and have relevant experience, but since I applied just by sending in a resume and cover letter, it'll be easy for them to overlook me.
Any thoughts?
Do you have any connections at the company, or did you just apply on a whim via the online system. If you have any connections or even potential alumni connections, I would reach out to them to seek advice. If you do, you'll 1) potentially get some helpful advice about the firm and 2) make a new contact at the firm who can potentially check things out for you.
If, however, you do not have any contacts at the company, which sounds like that is the case, given that you have already made the phone call, you cannot send an email - you need to just make another call - probably by Wednesday - to show your continued interest and enthusiasm for an opportunity. If you get blown off, then it's not meant to be at this stage and continuing to call them beyond that will only be annoying. You can definitely make one more call, but if you get completely blown off, then forget it, and seek another opportunity. Good luck.
hey thanks for the response. i sent a resume and CL directly to an HR rep for a position advertised on my college's career webpage.
i have no contacts at the firm as of now, but I could reach out to alumni. My question in that case then would be about what I should say: do i make it clear that i've applied for this position - and if so - does it seem strange to guise the discussion as me seeking to learn about the firm?
thanks so much
bump. anyone?
Following up via phone after applying for a job (Originally Posted: 06/06/2011)
Hey guys,
so in recent weeks when I have applied to jobs at random, smaller places and have called them to follow up on my job status, it seems that a lot of them don't take phone calls for job inquiries.
Now I mentioned this to my relative who did the same thing a few years back and said that he rarely me with such responses. Is this a growing trend that more companies don't entertain phone calls for jobs? Any one else get a lot of the same responses?
A lot of companies don't like phone calls. If you're applying at smaller firms you should try contacting MDs and set up general informational interviews and then applying after that. Many MDs will really commend you for your initiative and persistence. Cold calling usually works better than cold emailing and you should contact MDs and principals because 1.) they make the hiring decisions, and 2.) they will be more willing to talk to you than analysts and junior level bankers.
Call about application? (Originally Posted: 02/10/2010)
Hey,
I've received several offers, but have not heard back from the one I want. Should I call them and say I have offers, but want to work for you. Or can I call just to inquire about my status?
How about calling to inquire on your status and express your interest in working for the company. If the conversation flows and questions are asked about other places you might be able to drop that you have offers, but calling up and saying "I have offers, decide or lose out on me" probably wont go over well.
If you have exploding offers, I don't see why you can't inform them. At the end of some of my first round interviews, my interviewer would explicitly say, "If you get any offers before you hear back from us, please let us know and we'll expedite your interview process."
Call only if you have comparable offers. Say you are waiting to hear back from GS and you only have a no-name boutique offer, do not call them. This will not help. However, if you have an offer from a second tier BB such as CS, def. give them a call to let them know.
It is unlikely you'll be able to go through a full set of interviews with the bank you're interested in prior to your offers expiring. You can lob in a call and explain your situation, but it is unlikely that it will go anywhere in a timely fashion. I hope you like the offers you already have!
Emailing Recruiter (Originally Posted: 03/26/2013)
Is emailing a recruiter about the status of my application ok, or would this come off as annoying and needy? (this is a BB bank btw) I applied 3 weeks ago and have not heard back on anything, they also mentioned that they will "finalize" on recruiting on the next "few" weeks.. so I'm getting worried.
Did you follow-up at all after submitting your application?
Maybe you should follow-up.
I just applied via the online job portal, I haven't followed-up yet.
It sometimes takes a LOT longer than three weeks to hear back from the online portal. I submitted my app in early November and didn't get invited to interview until first week in January. If they already mentioned they are going to be finalizing things in the next few weeks, then wait a few weeks.
edit: not to mention that your application is way late for most BB recruiting.
it's technically their job to inform you so I would definitely ask if you want to
When I applied through these BB application portals, I never got a specific contact to whom I can contact back. How do you in the first place know whom to contact to?
Might as well ask. You are pretty late for BB recruiting as most banks have wrapped up recruiting. The portals are generally black holes, anyways.
Following up after emailing (Originally Posted: 03/18/2011)
hey guys still in the midst of FT job search here having a hard time finding shit. So I applied to a bunch of consulting and finance positions that were posted on this website and i applied on their websites which is usually just sending an email with your resume attached. I feel that this is a black hole and more distinguishing is necessary.
I want to call them to follow up about my application with them. I was wondering what is the correct approach to take when I call them? I was thinking that I could call the company phone and say "hi i emailed you about such and such position and was wondering about the status of my application"
any input would be great guys. thanks in advance
