Just looking for a general idea? For instance, if you're looking in the lower part of the top 30 Georgia Tech has 1% African American. So, if you're an African American applying there is it pretty close to an auto admit as long as they think you can do the work (i.e. you fall somewhere in the middle 80% range for gpa/work experience/gmat)? I mean, they supposedly have AA there so I can't see them being all that selective when that's very far below the population of 10% or so African American.

And there are quotas...it's unfair but investment banks are (like farming and oil/gas industry) dominated by white males. Banks are going to take their percentage of URMs to check it off their list. My father was in the oil and gas business and he stated that it would be better for the livelihood of a business if they hired an average white engineer over a top black engineer, assuming the talent disparity wasn't big enough to salvo the company. Racist? Yes, probably, but it comes down to relating with clients or roughnecks on a drilling rig that don't exactly relate well with non-whites.

by Kirby23According to what I read on businessweek their business school has only 1% African American (though you are correct about the engineering thing). It's higher for other schools that Georgia Tech has.
